Purpose/Rationale: This paper examines how the magnitude of intra-weeklyprice differences for day passes affects perceived fairness and behavioralintentions across different pricing schemes.
Design/Methodology/Approach: The data was collected through an onlinesurvey experiment among alpine skiers. We use ordinal logistic and leastsquares regressions to test the relationships between pricing schemes, fairness perceptions, and customer reactions.
Findings: The magnitude of the price difference negatively affects perceivedfairness. We also find that the price difference influences purchase andrevenge intentions, but this effect depends on the size of the pricedifference across pricing scenarios.
Practical implications: Managers in the service sectors considering introducingvariable pricing can directly apply our recommendations presented in the articlewhen considering introducing a more variable approach to pricing.
Research Contribution: The research findings contribute to the literature byshowing that the magnitude of price differences plays a vital role whenexamining both price fairness perceptions and purchase- and revengeintentions.
Originality/Value: This research addresses a gap in the existing literature byconducting a comprehensive analysis of how variations in price magnitudeunder different pricing schemes influence perceived fairness, purchase intentions, and revenge within the alpine skiing industry.

We evaluate a fast-track ticket alternative in the alpine skiing industry using data from a survey of skiers at a major ski resort in Norway. We estimate price-response functions, optimal prices for fast-track tickets and use regression to analyse the most important characteristics of skiers who demand the fast-track ticket alternative. Our findings show that the additional willingness to pay for a fast-track ticket over the standard day-pass ticket ranges from 4% (one minute waiting time) to 13% (20 minutes waiting time). The skiers with the highest demand for the fast-track ticket alternative are typically single men living near the ski resort who do most of their alpine skiing during the weekend. Some respondents expressed critical concerns regarding the fast-track ticket alternative, and we therefore discuss some customer acceptance challenges and ethical aspects associated with such an alternative.

In this study, we examine sustainable consumption from a ski areaperspective by using the exploratory sequential mixed-methodapproach. We apply a cross-national approach to investigate howcustomers’preferences for sustainable service alternativestranslate into willingness-to-pay, comparing results from Norwayand Switzerland. The results show that alpine skiers in generalreport being willing to pay more for a day pass if the ski area iseither environmentally-certified, carbon-neutral, or uses onlynatural snow. The positive effects are reported even strongeramong environmentally-friendly skiers and skiers fromSwitzerland. We discuss the implications our results have for skiarea managers wanting to incorporate sustainability in the overallpricing strategy.

The alpine skiing industry faces a decline in the number of new active skiers, dropouts of the existing active skiers, and a decline in overall participation frequency. Structural leisure constraints can be considered as a form of managerial failure preventing customers from participating in leisure activities. The purpose of this study is to use choice modelling to examine how the marginal willingness to pay for various leisure constraining factors differ and to provide empirical evidence of how pricing could be used as a negotiation instrument to overcome structural leisure constraints. The rationale behind the choice modelling approach is that a respondent chooses from a set of hypothetical scenarios of a product or service that includes various combinations of attribute levels. The findings emphasize that skiing preferences and marginal willingness to pay vary among less frequent, frequent, and very frequent skiers. Price differentiation can be used as an instrument to limit the influence of constraints and help individuals overcome the structural leisure constraints. The study provides valuable implications for practitioners based on an understanding of the price's impact on individuals’ choices.

The data are related to two research articles: “The relative importance of ski resort-and weather-related characteristics when going alpine skiing” [1] and “Optimal pricing of alpine ski passes in the case of crowdedness and reduced skiing capacity” [2]. A rating-based conjoint survey experiment on active alpine skiers at a big ski area located in Inland Norway was performed in February of 2018 to collect the data and pertain to 400 respondents doing more than 7200 ratings. A total of ten versions of the same questionnaire type were used to obtain information about preferences on ski resort- and weather-related characteristics when going alpine skiing. We display the raw data organized such that they can be easily downloaded and used directly to either (1) replicate the analyses performed in the related research articles, or (2) run one's own analyses on the topic of interest. The data may also be useful to lecturers teaching students about the key concepts of survey experiments and causal modelling.

In this note we provide preliminary empirical evidence on Norwegian alpine skiers’ willingness-to-pay for season pass attributes that make alpine skiing more sustainable. We focus on two key attributes; (1) compensating for the CO2 emissions associated with the activity by purchasing CO2 quotas and (2) compulsory use of public transportation to/from the ski resort. The results show that there is a substantial interest in season passes that includes CO2 compensation. However, combining season passes with compulsory use of public transportation (ski bus) does not seem to be attractive to Norwegian alpine skiers/snowboarders. The optimal prices of the two alternatives are approximately 11.5% higher (CO2 version) and 25% lower (ski bus version) when compared to a regular season pass.

The implementation of variable pricing at ski resorts can shift demand from peak periods to off-peak periods if at least some skiers have the flexibility and willingness to do so. This is often referred to as diversion, or demand shifting, and can directly affect the profit-maximizing prices ski resorts should set for their tickets. In this paper, we first model how diversion is related to various levels of the intra-weekly price differences at a ski resort. Then we use this model to recalculate the optimal variable prices a ski resort should set when accounting for the demand shifting and capacity constraints. The results show that the optimal prices the ski resort should set are influenced by both diversion and capacity constraints. The latter aspect is particularly relevant in the ongoing global pandemic. Ski resort managers can make direct use of our modelling framework and results when implementing new pricing strategies.

In this paper, we estimate price-response functions for a ski resort using a conjoint framework. The analysis is based on survey data from 350 skiers at a large ski resort in the inland region of Norway. The results suggest that the waiting time at the main lifts (crowdedness) and the proportion of slopes open affect the optimal (profit-maximizing) price the ski resort should charge for a one-day ski pass. The results of this study support previous findings from the literature using alternative methodological approaches and can be used directly by ski resort managers when developing new pricing schemes for their ski resort.

Changes in a company’s pricing strategy have the potential to influence profitability. Data from choice-based conjoint questionnaire were used to estimate revenue-maximizing dynamic prices accounting for both demand shifting and market expansion. The results show that dynamic prices induce greater demand and could increase revenue by 0.5% to 7.5%. Moreover, skiers have a strong preference and higher willingness-to-pay for good weather-related skiing conditions, suggesting that skiers prefer skiing during the midweek at a higher price, instead of on the weekend, if the skiing conditions are better in the midweek. Relevant implications are provided for practitioners.

In this paper, we examine how alpine skiers evaluate various ski resortand weather-related characteristics using a conjoint framework. The analysis is based on survey data from 400 existing skiers at a large ski resort in the Inland region of Norway. The results suggest that the weather of the skiing day and the price of a lift ticket are the most important attributes to alpine skiers, followed by ski lift queue time and the fraction of slopes open. The calculated part-worth functions also reveal the most desirable and most unpleasant weather conditions for alpine skiing. This insight can be used directly by ski resort managers when forming new pricing strategies.

In this study, we used the hedonic price method to examine what affected one-day ski lift ticket prices in Norway in the winter season 2014/2015. The analysis was based on geographic information, supply-related characteristics and on climatic data of 83 alpine ski resorts. Additionally, we estimated which ski resorts were under- or overpriced. The results indicate that vertical drop, share of intermediate difficulty ski slopes, number of snow parks, travel distance to the nearest large ski resort in Sweden and price at the nearest ski resort in Norway positively affect prices. Travel distance to the nearest ski resort in Norway and to the nearest large urban area in Denmark or Sweden, a total lift capacity of less than 3000 persons per hour, location in western Norway and a location close to more than two other ski resorts significantly and negatively affect prices. The results suggest that, according to a price–quality relationship, the Hemsedal ski resort provided the highest quality of skiing experience. Overall, ski lift ticket prices were influenced by the pricing decisions of leading ski resorts in Norway. Managers can use the results of this study to make better pricing decisions to increase the profitability of their ski resorts.

The purpose of this paper is to examine the relationship between price and demand and to determine the effect of variable pricing on ski resort revenues. We use data from a survey of existing skiers at three ski resorts in the inland region of Norway to estimate price–response functions, based on a number of characteristics, including day-of-week and distance to the resort. The various price–response functions are subsequently used to calculate optimal prices for each subset of skiers according to their differing characteristics. The results show that ski resorts have the potential to increase their total revenues substantially by adopting a more dynamic approach to pricing. Thus, our results provide academic support for the findings of ski resorts that have implemented such pricing strategies.

In this article, we examine two aspects of the relation between variable intra-week pricing and alpine skiing attendance at three ski resorts in Norway. First, we study what affects the probability of increased skiing frequency during the midweek if the price is reduced in this period compared to the regular (weekend) price. Second, we examine the cannibalization effect from a lower midweek price on the weekend skiing activity. Our results show that the probability of increased midweek skiing at a lower price is significantly influenced by age and income. The probability that cannibalization occurs is significantly influenced by skiing interest and family status.

This study examines visitation patterns of alpine skiers who possess various types of ski passes, based on a data set consisting of the number of daily visitors at a Norwegian ski resort from 2008/2009 to 2011/2012. The results show that some of the variations in visitation patterns can be explained by day of the week, holidays and weather conditions. These factors have different effects across types of ski pass (one-day-, multi-day-, and season pass) and across time periods during the winter season. It is also found that day of the week, holidays, opening hours, and weather conditions significantly influence the average number of trips one skier make during a skiing day.

The purpose of this study was to examine how social and personal factors influence overall skiing frequency and the frequency of repeated visits to a specific ski resort of existing domestic skiers in a typical winter season. The study used data from a survey conducted at three ski resorts in the Inland region of south-eastern Norway at the end of the winter season of 2015/2016. Ordinary least squares regression analysis highlighted that variation in skiing frequency can be explained mainly by skiing interest and household income. Additional factors influencing repeated visits to a specific ski resort were the location of the permanent residence and private holiday home close to the ski resort. The results did not show notable differences between the estimated effects at the mean and those estimated for skiers with the highest and lowest visit frequency.

Various weather conditions can have a strong influence on the alpine skiing experience. This paper is the first to formally examine the relationship between levels of discount for various unpleasant weather scenarios and quantity demanded of alpine skiing day-passes. We use data from a contingent valuation survey among existing skiers at three ski resorts in the Inland region of Norway to estimate price-response functions for six specific weather-related scenarios. These price-response functions were then used to calculate optimal discount levels for each scenario. Our results show that (1) ski resorts can increase revenue substantially by offering weather discounts, and (2) there are big differences in optimal discounts for the different weather conditions.

This study is the first to examine formally what drives variations in skier attendance at Norwegian ski resorts. The authors use a unique dataset of the number of daily visitors at a specific ski resort from 2007/2008 to 2013/2014. The main findings suggest that weather conditions, day of the week and holidays significantly affect the number of daily visitors. The time series regression analysis highlights the demand pattern and specific non-linear relationships between visitors and wind chill temperature. The study finds that, if the wind chill temperature is below –9.5°C, a temperature increase has a positive effect on the number of daily visitors. Similarly, if the wind chill temperature is above –9.5°C, a higher temperature leads to a lower number of skier visits, on average. Tourism providers can use these results for decision making, planning and managing ski resort operations. In addition, the findings could serve as an incentive to implement innovative pricing tactics.

A structural equation modeling (SEM) analysis of fairness perceptions and responses to early-bird pricing among alpine skiers in Scandinavia.

Early-bird discounts provide savings for customers who buy the product or service in advance of usage, enabling the provider to utilize its relatively fixed capacity better. This pricing strategy has gained ground in several industries, such as hospitality, rental cars, cruise lines, railways, energy, and broadcasting.
The success of variable pricing depends on the crucial factor of customer acceptance. An unfavorable response from consumers poses a substantial risk, potentially leading to negative behavioral reactions. In this article we explore customers' perceptions and reactions to discounts on pre-purchased ski passes, considering variations in the length of the pre-purchase period. Three dimensions are used to measure perceived unfairness: Perceived normative deviation, Perceived opacity and Negative affects. The three dimensions are included in a SEM analysis as constructs, where the first dimension is given by the reflexive indicators “Immoral pricing”, “Shocking pricing” and “Unacceptable pricing”. Perceived opacity includes the indicators “Incomprehensible pricing”, “Unclear pricing” and “Illogical pricing”, while negative affects consist of the indicators “I feel tricked”, “I feel insulated” and “I feel manipulated”. Customer reactions is included in the SEM-analyses by the constructs Revenge Intentions and Purchase Intentions, where Revenge contain the indicators “ Say negative things about the resort to friends/family”, “Complain to the company about this pricing policy”, “Post negative things about the resort on the internet” and “Switch to another ski resort if possible”. Our analysis is based on a survey among Norwegian and Swedish alpine skiers (1000 respondents).

Denne rapporten dokumenterer midtveisevaluering

konsentrert i Oslo (Gran, Torp, & Theie, 2016; Power & Spilsbury, 2017; Statistisk
virksomheter i Norge.
Data for analysene omfatter nevnte bransjer i alle økonomiske regioner utenfor Oslo.
