  Purpose This paper examines why many nature-based entrepreneurs bypass formal advisors and develops an explanation of how cognitive distance, trust and network ties influence entrepreneurs' engagement with formal advice. Design/methodology/approach Fifty-seven interviews with nature-based entrepreneurs and fourteen with formal business advisors in a regional support system in Mid-Sweden were analyzed thematically to examine how entrepreneurs evaluate advice, how trust forms and how network ties influence those assessments. Findings Entrepreneurs filter advice through cognitive distance and tie strength. Formal advisors typically offer novel knowledge (high distance and weak ties) but struggle to secure trust; informal contacts provide trust (low distance and strong ties) but tend to recycle familiar routines. The analysis identifies an advisory chasm filled only when entrepreneurs encounter a rare professional expert, an individual who unites industry experience with business expertise and operates near the optimum cognitive distance. This finding links ecosystem structure to advisory uptake, an overlooked mechanism in entrepreneurial ecosystem debates. Practical implications Entrepreneurial ecosystem managers should invest in brokerage functions that match entrepreneurs with advisors who balance industry familiarity and business breadth and treat informal strong-tie networks as complements to formal programs. Originality/value The study extends optimal cognitive distance theory from inter-firm collaboration to advisor–entrepreneur relationships, integrates trust and tie strength into this framework and develops a four-part advisor typology that highlights the professional expert role. These contributions help explain why investments in support programs do not always lead to engagement and how they can be redesigned for more efficient knowledge transfer and venture growth.

  Our chapter explores how technological innovation and socio-behavioral change interact in shaping the future of energy systems in the quest for carbon neutrality. We present a strategic analysis of four divergent scenarios—Disrupt, Downsize, Scaleup, and Conserve. Drawing on data from a Swedish research project that includes case studies, a Delphi study, and scenario analysis, we highlight the importance of imagining desirable futures, policy frameworks, and adaptive strategies, and offer a comprehensive framework for understanding potential pathways toward achieving the Paris Agreement targets. By examining each scenario’s implications for stakeholders such as utilities, investors, consumers, and policymakers, our chapter highlights different approaches to decarbonization. The implications can guide stakeholders to better anticipate future developments, identify risks and opportunities, and make informed decisions that contribute to a resilient and equitable energy future.

  This study examines the challenges faced by deep technology (deep tech) startups in the innovation process, with a focus on the financing of their long and capital-intensive development processes. Two case companies were studied—Alpha Robotics and Beta Robotics—to analyze how their different approaches to the innovation process affected their ability to secure financing and commercialize their products. Results showed that Alpha Robotics’ product had widespread market interest, but difficulty charging a high margin on the product, while Beta Robotics had a more specific market, making it more difficult to secure customers. The research further highlighted the need for an effective innovation system that provides support for deep-tech companies in terms of funding, access to human capital, and resources for industrialization processes. To better support deep-tech startups, the innovation system should invest in innovation environments that have the breadth and depth of knowledge needed to identify any deficiencies in human capital and reduce information asymmetry. Finally, close cooperation with the startup company is essential to reduce the risks associated with the financing of deep-tech projects.

  This chapter questions the increasingly popular narrative of technological advancement as a series of abrupt “Industrial Revolutions,” favoring instead an understanding of technological change as an ongoing process of “Industrial Evolution.” It argues that the recent explosion in the use of the Fourth Industrial Revolution and related terms are indicative of its use as a buzzword. By examining the music recording industry’s transformation, the authors illustrate that perceived “revolutionary” shifts are better understood as cumulative, evolutionary processes, shaped by societal shifts and cumulative advancements in technology. The study advocates hence for a nuanced understanding of technological progress, emphasizing the interconnected and path-dependent nature of developments. It argues that the concept of distinct industrial revolutions generally oversimplifies the complex and continuous trajectory of technological and industrial evolution. The implications for research include a call for a shift in conceptual frameworks and research methodologies, emphasizing longitudinal studies and interdisciplinary approaches that acknowledge historical dependencies rather than suggesting questionable scenarios before and after. For practitioners, the notion of “Industrial Evolution” necessitates a deeper historical understanding of strategic decision-making. Policymakers are encouraged to adopt a visionary, long-term perspective to foster sustained and inclusive innovation. The chapter concludes with a call for further exploration through longitudinal case studies across various sectors and investigation into the pace of socio-technological evolution.

  Digital entrepreneurship, often praised as a driver for sustainability, is characterized by substantial “dark sides” that can impede its assumed benefits. This chapter critically explores these adverse unintended effects, focusing on four key areas: (1) rising energy consumption, (2) social inequality, (3) resource depletion, and (4) the concentration of power in the hands of tech giants. Through empirical illustrations, we demonstrate how digital innovations (such as AI, blockchain, and platform-based business models) may exacerbate environmental and social issues. This work calls for a systemic, polycentric approach to digital entrepreneurship, emphasizing the need for balanced governance, social justice, and sustainable energy management. By addressing these challenges, we aim to guide digital entrepreneurs toward a more inclusive and environmentally responsible future, thereby more closely aligning it with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This chapter serves as both a critical warning and a call to action for scholars, entrepreneurs, and policymakers to rethink the role of digitalization in entrepreneurship for sustainable development.

  Despite regulatory efforts and market availability, the adoption of zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs) in the road freight sector is limited. This paper investigates the influence of managers' policy mix perceptions on the uptake of ZEVs in Sweden. Based on a survey of transport operation managers, we analyse the interaction between their perceptions of how technology-neutral the prevailing policy mix is, the anticipated regret of premature technology adoption, the rate of technology change and their mutual influence on the decision to delay ZEV adoption. The study's findings reveal a positive correlation between managers' perceptions of technology neutrality and adoption delay. We further explain the mechanism in this relationship by confirming that anticipated regret mediates the positive correlation between perceived technology neutrality and the ZEV adoption delay decision: The more technology-neutral the policy mix is perceived, the more anticipating regret over adopting ZEVs is expressed by the managers, which, in turn, increases the likelihood to delay ZEV adoption. Moreover, managers' perceptions of the rate of technological change affect their anticipated regret. The work contributes to the transition literature by unveiling how a specific policy mix perception, namely technology neutrality, could delay the adoption of ZEVs and calls for a nuanced re-evaluation of the current policy mix to facilitate a faster transition towards net-zero goals. It also underscores the importance of paying closer attention to how individual actor-internal factors (such as perceptions and emotions) of individual decision-makers in organisations may influence transition processes.

  Recent work has offered a more nuanced view of incumbent actors’ roles in transitions, yet a comprehensive understanding of how reorientation activities and subsequent interaction patterns among different incumbent actor types shape the direction of system reconfigurations remains underexplored. This paper proposes a framework for empirically assessing actors’ relational dynamics in response to low-carbon transitions and conceptualises actor interaction types and the nature of their interaction. Through a case study of the low-carbon transition of road freight transport in Sweden, we examine how reorientation dynamics, e.g., coalitions, competition, and contestations, can facilitate and hinder system reconfigurations by creating regime tensions. Our study highlights that incumbency reorientations are multi-dimensional, with actor involvement and strategies varying, leading to divergent actor positions and role constellations as actors attempt to reconfigure the focal regime. Extending beyond the Swedish case, five avenues for future research are outlined.

  How can studying paradoxes in business networks help understand the networks' adaptation and survival? IMP identifies three central paradoxes influencing business networks: i) Development of Relationships vs. Inability to Change, ii) Controlling vs. Effectiveness, and iii) Stability vs. Change. Studying them seems critical to knowing how interdependent participants in business networks adapt to one another. To do that, we use a co-evolutionary lens to review 41 articles dealing with business network paradoxes from an IMP perspective. Results of the Reflexive Thematic Analysis underline that salient tensions mainly originate from weak coordinating norms, resource misallocation, the relationship of newness and aging, and Machiavellian behaviour. As the main value of our work, we then advance that embracing a co-evolutionary perspective can help shed novel light on these paradoxes by contrasting the factors that make the tensions salient with those able to overcome them. Specifically, we identify moral behaviour, structuration of the network, network capability development, and co-adaptation as four main factors that mitigate the paradoxes and help networks' adaptation and survival. Accordingly, we advocate a co-evolutionary conceptual framework regarding paradoxes and outline five co-evolutionary claims as implications for research and practice.

  Value co-creation is a core focus area in both B2B marketing and strategy research, necessitating resource utilization within and across organizational boundaries. In the Industrial Marketing and Purchasing (IMP) group, scholars have focused on the interactions among resources as one important way to analyze central questions about resources in business relationships and networks. This has produced a breadth of investigations and concepts that are locally defined and utilized. This may hamper further theoretical development and inhibit analytical precision. The purpose of this paper is to develop a more general shared understanding of resource interaction by identifying and explicating the key concepts used, and to assess its status as an approach. The paper synthesizes 20 years of research to identify key concepts and the relationships across concepts. This provides both a platform for further conceptual and empirical research within IMP and potential for cross-fertilization with parallel B2B areas.

  This paper develops the concept of entrepreneurship under constraint through a case study of a stigmatized neighborhood in Norway. It asks how communities with limited resources respond to local sustainability problems through collective, place-based, and often nonprofit forms of initiative that fall outside conventional firm-centered understandings of entrepreneurship. Drawing on interviews, survey data, field visits, and observational material, the paper identifies three forms of constraint that affect entrepreneurial efforts in different ways: blocking constraints, mobilizing constraints, and organizing constraints. The paper contributes to current research on community entrepreneurship by showing how entrepreneurial agency develops through local adaptation, mutual support, and practical problem-solving under conditions of weak support, stigma, and underinvestment. It also offers a more differentiated account of constraint by showing why some initiatives stay small, why others generate local momentum, and why even promising efforts may struggle to hold together over time.

  Deep-tech startups are specific types of entrepreneurial ventures that are based on disruptive technologies that are capital-intensive, research-intensive and require lengthy development processes. These characteristics make deep-tech startups more difficult to finance and commercialize than other kinds of entrepreneurial ventures. As such, failure rates are particularly high, which precludes certain opportunities to make societal and commercial impact. From our experiences with deep-tech startups, we believe they often fail due lack of tailored support, too few valuable connections and poor funding. Overall, today's innovation systems are not very well designed for deep-tech startups.
