Programmet ble etablert i 2012 som Ph.d. i anvendt økologi og akkreditert av NOKUT. En revidert studieplan ble godkjent i 2019. Navnet ble samtidig endret til Ph.d. i anvendt økologi og bioteknologi, eller PhD in Applied Ecology and Biotechnology.
