This article draws on insights of young people learning to make natural pigments and traditional paintings in acute climate vulnerable areas. Why do they paint during ongoing crises and how do they voice their future concerns? Critical realism is applied as a meta-theory in this field-based study in a slum area in Kolkata and the Sundarbans mangrove forest. Methods comprise focus groups, semi-structured interviews, and participant observation. Analysis was done in an abductive process, applying Roy Bhaskar’s model of ‘four-planar social being’. The analysis demonstrates how painting with natural pigments leads the young ones towards: (a) discovering beauty in nature (b) transcendence of borders (c) transformation and responsible action (d) discovering one’s own dignity. Findings are discussed considering the key concepts co-presence and crisis system. I reflect upon how this local effort can inspire a new economy, with the signposts: becoming co-present with the natural world and the necessity of beauty

In this chapter we provide a discussion of the role of moral sentiments in economics and economic analysis. We aim to uncover some implications of a moral dimension being absent in the mainstream economic framework. This is discussed with a particular focus on the consequences for social welfare, considering the commons. The first section explores the connection between moral sentiments and Economics as a discipline. Next follows a critical and historical analysis of moral sentiments and the commons, emphasizing the need to provide a redefinition of economic agents through the concepts of embeddedness, reflexivity and personal identity. We argue that reflexivity plays a particularly important role in mediating social choices—even if this dimension of moral sentiments has not yet been fully recognized—and in the paradigmatic shift from endless economic growth towards Eudaimonia as an end. Our concluding remarks argue that bringing ethical considerations to economic analysis enables us to overcome the ‘trade-off’ between normatively ‘good’ moral sentiments and social well-being. We uphold that ‘good’ moral sentiments overlap with social moral sentiments, such as the notion of social love. These social moral sentiments offer the opportunity to enhance public policies thanks to a more applicable consideration of social well-being.

What kind of music teaching and learning takes place among folk musicians and young ones, aiming to reclaim their oral tradition and educate new master teachers? This question will be answered by drawing on extensive fieldwork at nine song-and-music schools in rural Bangladesh, applying critical realism as a meta-theory. An overall aim is to expand views on what music teaching and learning can be, with potential implications for education beyond rural Bangladesh. The empirical material was collected through a focus group interview with 12 students in an advanced class and in-depth interviews with these students and their three master teachers. The analysis shows that the generational transmission can be seen as based on the ‘four pillars’ of music pedagogy. These are re-described through dialectical critical realism in an abductive process, showing that music pedagogy can open an ontology and dialectic on being and becoming human for the participants. Results are discussed with absence and remembrance as key concepts. The study provides practical and philosophical insights into a music pedagogy about deep learning and resonance: towards transformative praxis.

In the present paper, we explore the impact of singing for girls in rural Bangladesh. Previous findings in this field-based interview study (with 18 girls) have demonstrated that singing can act as a driving force in young girls’ psychological individuation processes, implying increased agency and autonomy. A critical question, however, is to what extent the village girls will manage to maintain a feeling of agency as they pass through puberty. How do they navigate between their own wish to continue singing and pressure from cultural norms (such as getting married)? Using Margareth Archer’s morphogenetic approach and Arjun Appadurai’s approach to culture as a capacity as analytical tools, we connect different modes of reflexivity to the girls’ capacity to aspire. We discuss specific mechanisms that emerge as relevant for the girls/young women as they navigate their way through the Bengali rural society.

A voice of one’s own – singing as an individuation process
Background: Vocalizing is key to the individual’s psychological development, and singing can be vital in creating a sense of community. There is, however, scant knowledge on how singing can contribute to finding a voice of one’s own in youth. Method: We explored the impact of singing in a qualitative study with Bangladeshi village girls learning folk songs. The data material includes in-depth interviews with 10 girls coming from rural areas where girls often get married off early. Results: Analysis resulted in three main themes: 1) To become oneself through singing, 2) To comfort oneself through singing, and 3) To get to know oneself through the teacher. Conclusion: Findings demonstrate that the girls discover and integrate affect through singing, giving them courage to stand up for themselves. The paper argues that singing may be a driving force in psychological individuation processes towards increased autonomy.
