Usama Awan is an Associate Professor of sustainability with a focus on management and strategy at the Center for Research on Digitalization and Sustainability, Inland School of Business and Social Sciences, Høgskolen I Innlandet, Kongsvinger, Norway. He completed an MSc in International Marketing (2010) from Malardalen University, Sweden, and an MBA (2002) from Quaid-i-Azam University Islamabad, Pakistan. He received his Ph.D. degree with distinction in Sustainability Management in 2019 from the LUT School of Business and Management, Lappeenranta-Lahti University of Technology (LUT), Finland. He also holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Professional and higher education teaching practices from Haaga-Helia University of Applied Sciences, Helsinki, Finland. He has worked as a postdoc research fellow at Palumbo Donahue School of Business, Duquesne University, USA, from March 2021 to March 2022. He has also been an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Commerce, Mount Allison University, Canada, from May 2021 to December 2021.

Moreover, he has also worked as a senior researcher at Lappeenranta-Lahti University of Technology (LUT), Finland. After completing his Ph.D., Usama worked as a visiting lecturer in business-to-business marketing at LAB University of applied sciences, Finland. Before joining academics and after my MBA in 2002, he worked in a managerial position at NADRA(www.nadra.gov.pk) (information technology firm) from July 2003 to December 2010 as an operations manager. My Ph.D. research focused on when and how export manufacturers could benefit from integrating cultural intelligence in partnerships and alliances in cross-border relationship management to achieve economic and social sustainability objectives.

Teaching

Before joining HINN, his 6 years of teaching experience includes working as an Assistant Professor of industrial marketing from December 2010 to Feb 2016 at COMSATS University Islamabad. He has previously taught courses on strategic management and innovation, Global Business Management, Project Management, Entrepreneurship and Innovation Management, Contemporary issues in Leadership, Global Supply Chain Management, Operations Management, Quantitative Methods, and business-to-business marketing in the MBA and BBA programs. Usama also has 6+ years of professional experience at the university level, lecturing to undergraduate and graduate students in business. His administrative skills and organizational capacities enabled him to be part of many administrative activities at the university level.

Research

All his academic research efforts were nationally and internationally recognized by several articles published in international ISI journals (43 papers) through his contribution to books addressed to a wide scientific audience (10 book chapters). Thorough scientific work presented at International and National Congresses/Conferences (6 internationally published abstracts). Researchers from various fields have noticed my studies. They have received more than 2280 citations (H-index: 30). Much of his research focuses on two key internal organizational capabilities and environmental sustainability management in cross-border relationship management in manufacturing firms. Usama has a good working experience in several statistical programs, such as SPSS, PLS-SEM, and AMOS, and is a proficient user of agent-based modeling(ABM) and MCDM( Fuzzy-AHP, ISM, and TOPSIS).

Usama's current research focuses on the intersection of digital alignment and sustainability management within strategic management and global supply chain management. His future research plans involve conceptualizing paradoxical issues in corporate sustainability within emerging technologies (Industry 5.0 environment). This includes examining how firms in the process of transitioning their circular business model innovation for sustainability in the product-service system and development strategy for retracement and tracking of materials can efficiently design circular supply chains and business models. An important component of his research examines how technological choices, such as digital twin, quantum computing technologies, and additive manufacturing, could impact the strategic management of global supply chain operations to foster sustainable innovation and support the strategic management of circular supply chains in addressing sustainable development goals (SDGs) 9 and 11.

Since 2011, through Sustainable Development (SD) logic, my research has focused on solving the challenging and complex issue of sustainable consumption at the firm level from the perspective of social and environmental sustainability. The process by which manufacturing firms incorporate data-driven culture into existing routines and use them to generate organizational learning (OL) and improve sustainable environmental development is a central concern in the green management literature. For this, the study examines how and to what extent data-driven culture contributes to developing and integrating organizational learning capability (OLC) for environmental performance (EP). The analysis is informed by theory on a knowledge-based view and dynamic capabilities. We propose a conceptual model that examines the moderation-mediation impact of data-driven culture on green human resource management (HRM) and EP through OLC. We empirically test our model using primary survey data from 274 manufacturing enterprises in Pakistan. Partial least-square structural equation modeling and moderated-mediation regression analysis were used to assess the hypothesized correlations between the variables. The study implies that green HRM practices can facilitate OLC to achieve and gain high EP in contexts of rapid change. Further, the findings show that firms adopting a data-driven culture may have better EP. Having a robust data-driven culture makes organizations focus more on learning capability development that promotes increased EP. This research offers several significant contributions to green management literature and theory. Managers should promote green human resource strategies and the importance of data-driven culture for greening organizations. In today's data-rich and unpredictable world, these empirical studies provide relevant and practical advice for managers to implement data-driven culture to make shift and support sustainable development issues.

Aviation cargo remains vital in the economic activities to transported goods from one place to another. The developed and developing countries mainly consider the transaction routes for air transportation for safe and quickest mode. Chinese economy is attracting the global World through its exports. The country's air cargo system is mainly reliant on gasoline and petroleum-based fuels, which harms the country's green transportation agenda. The high use of fuel combustions in the aviation sector needed greenfield investment that helps to use green energy as an alternative sustainable fuel. Further, sustainable aviation insurance and financial coverage are needed to mitigate the adverse negative externalities from air cargo operations. Based on the crucial facts, the study used air cargo operations, transportation fuel combustions, private investment in the transportation and insurance coverage in the pollution damage function for the China economy using data from 1975 to 2020. The research employed a non-linear ARDL Bounds testing strategy to break down the sequence of variables into dynamic positive and negative multipliers. Positive shocks in air freight, insurance services, and greenfield investment have been shown to reduce carbon emissions immediately and over the long term. In the short term, carbon damages are exacerbated by the negative shocks resulting from the use of transportation fuel and the availability of insurance. Moreover, both the positive and negative shocks associated with transportation fuel combustions and air transportation freights contribute to a rise in carbon damage. The variance decomposition analysis validated the asymmetric correlations between the aforementioned variables in the intertemporal environment. Based on the findings, negative shocks from total fuel combustions are expected to impose the greatest carbon damages over the next decade, followed by insurance services and air freight operations. The study concludes that air cargo operations need to be sustainable transacting routes fueled by biofuel energy sources, greenfield investment, and sustainable aviation insurance coverage to achieve the ‘green is clean’ transportation agenda.

Previous research has proposed different determinants of the success and failure of technological innovation in industrial networks. However, following the recent COVID-19 pandemic crisis, distributors have been seeking to become more agile in identifying and transforming business processes to avoid failures. Although industrial practitioners have been broadly motivated to understand the effects of pandemics on business failure, the contingency factors that affect organizations in their responses to such sudden exogenous shocks remain unclear. Inspired by a burgeoning academic interest in viewing the COVID-19 pandemic as a digital accelerator, this paper examines how B2B distribution firms have been avoiding business failure by using their dynamic capabilities (DCs) in response to the sudden exogenous shocks caused by the pandemic. Based on data drawn from interviews conducted with a sample of B2B distribution firms, we argue that capitalizing on digital DCs—digital sensing (i. e., digital mindset crafting and digital scenario planning), digital seizing (i.e., engaging in strategic agility and balancing a digital portfolio), and digital transformation (i.e., navigating the innovation ecosystem, redesigning the internal structure, and improving digital maturity), —helps to prevent business failure during a pandemic.

Understanding the outlook of countries' economic complexity is vital for assessing the future of industries' product characterization. It provides opportunity and insight on how to mitigate the negative externalities that arises from the increasing pressure on the ecosystem. Based on this account, the effect of economic complexity and the corresponding outlook on environmental degradation vis-a-vis greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions alongside other environmental indicators are examined for the panel of Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden for the period 1995 to 2020. After employing Driscoll- Kraay's standard errors for random effect (RE) with individual effects for the examination, the results indicate that the region's level of economic complexity favors environmental sustainability. Contrarily, the economic complexity outlook spurs GHG emissions, thus suggesting that future performance of the region's economic complexity could be detrimental to its ecosystem. Another similar, and undesirable observation is that the increase in urban population hampers environmental quality as it causes a surge in GHG emissions. Meanwhile, the results then conclude that economic growth, economic complexity, and environmental-related technologies are found to be potent drivers of environmental sustainability as the indicators exert negative pressure on GHG emissions in the Nordic region. Important policies that potentially guide immediate, and future sector-wide activities toward enhancing the region's sustainable development programs are posited through the study outcome.

This study aimed to illustrate the impact of green human resources management on circular economy performance; the mediator role of green innovation; and the moderator roles of big data analytics and data-driven culture. A total of 438 survey questionnaires were collected from small and medium-sized enterprises from the Pakistani textile sector and evaluated through partial least square-structural equation modelling. The study’s outcomes revealed that green human resources management significantly impacts circular economy performance. Similarly, green innovation and big data analytics mediated and moderated between green human resources management and circular economy performance. Nevertheless, data-driven culture is needed to moderate between green human resources management and circular economy performance. The study presented a unique and novel idea of green human resources management concerning circular economy performance – the best solution for sustainable environmental fortification in the current decade while enhancing circular economy performance.

Purpose – This study focuses on establishing relations with some important but underestimated elements of knowledge dynamics and firm orientations to characterize organizational circular economy activities through eco-innovation (EIN). The advent of the circular economy (CE) in this post-pandemic era has brought unpredictable sustainable challenges for the manufacturing industries. This research paper aims to bring more clarity to the extant literature on the relationship between environmental innovation (EI) and CE. Design/methodology/approach – In this study, a systematic literature review methodology was used to research the determinants of EI in the knowledge environment that drives the implementation of a CE. Findings – This paper proposes a framework that articulates organizational learning and orientation dynamics and offers a new set of internal knowledge resources for a corporate CE. It is found that change toward CE requires connection with EI. However, successful CE growth largely depends on leveraging knowledge resources and orientation dynamics (stakeholder orientation, sustainability orientation, organization learning orientation and entrepreneurial orientation). CE techniques are still in their early phases of adoption and their implementation is still in its development. Circular knowledge economy (CKE) has the potential to be a useful alternative to achieving thriving CE to achieve sustainability in local and global businesses operations. Practical implications – This study helps companies to understand the organizational learning and different orientation dynamics for achieving CE principles. The research findings imply that EI is critical in establishing a sustainable transition toward CE through organizational learning and orientation dynamics and has garnered significant attention from academics, public policymakers and practitioners. The proposed framework can guide managers to develop sustainable policies related to the CE. This research recognizes that firm-level CKE is important in shaping how knowledge resources relate to CE within transition management literature. Originality/value – This paper abridges the knowledge gap in identifying key drivers and presents the current eminence, challenges and prognostications of sustainable EI parameters in the changing climate of CE. This study builds a framework that combines insights from different viewpoints and disciplines and extends one’s understanding of the relationship between EI and CE. From a theoretical perspective, this study explains the knowledge management complexity links between EI and CE. It builds a theoretical bridge between EI and CE to illustrate how firms transition toward CE following the recommendations. Thus, researchers should continue to support their research with appropriate theories that have the potential to explain EI and CE relationship phenomena, with a particular emphasis on some promising but underutilized theories such as organizational learning, dynamic capabilities and stakeholder theories.

Context The current technology revolution has posed unexpected challenges for the software industry. In recent years, the field of quantum computing (QC) technologies has continued to grow in influence and maturity, and it is now poised to revolutionise software engineering. However, the evaluation and prioritisation of QC challenges in the software industry remain unexplored, relatively under-identified and fragmented. Objective The purpose of this study is to identify, examine and prioritise the most critical challenges in the software industry by implementing a fuzzy analytic hierarchy process (F-AHP). Method First, to identify the key challenges, we conducted a systematic literature review by drawing data from the four relevant digital libraries and supplementing these efforts with a forward and backward snowballing search. Second, we followed the F-AHP approach to evaluate and rank the identified challenges, or barriers. Results The results show that the key barriers to QC adoption are the lack of technical expertise, information accuracy and organisational interest in adopting the new process. Another critical barrier is the lack of standards of secure communication techniques for implementing QC. Conclusion By applying F-AHP, we identified institutional barriers as the highest and organisational barriers as the second highest global weight ranked categories among the main QC challenges facing the software industry. We observed that the highest-ranked local barriers facing the software technology industry are the lack of resources for design and initiative while the lack of organisational interest in adopting the new process is the most significant organisational barrier. Our findings, which entail implications for both academicians and practitioners, reveal the emergent nature of QC research and the increasing need for interdisciplinary research to address the identified challenges.
