Forskningsgruppen LARGE innhenter kunnskap som støtter bærekraftig forvaltning av store arter og reduserer konflikter relatert til vilt. Dette oppnås gjennom å

  • Gjennomføre vitenskapelige studier på store arter og deres samspill med andre arter inkludert mennesker. Studiene skal være relevante for forvaltning og bevaring av arter.
  • Evaluere forvaltningstiltak som er rettet mot store arter og interessekonflikter rundt disse.
  • Sammenstille og formidle vitenskapelig kunnskap om store arter til forvaltningen, vitenskapen og allmennheten.
  • Integrere studenter på alle utdanningsnivåer i våre aktiviteter og prosjekter

Hvorfor studerer vi store dyr?

Store dyr er både unike og viktige

Å være stor har mange fordeler: Store arter vinner gjerne i konkurransen om mat og plass. Som rovdyr er de sterke og raske, og som byttedyr er de godt rystet mot rovdyrangrep. Varmblodige store arter har mindre varmetap enn små arter da forholdet mellom kroppsoverflate og volum er redusert. Ulempen med å være stor er imidlertid det høyere energibehovet knyttet til kroppsvekt, både for å opprettholde kroppens stoffskifte så vel som reproduksjon, forflytning og andre aktiviteter. Følgelig bruker store arter ofte større områder enn små arter for å sikre tilgang til ressurser og make. Mange store dyrearter lever lenge, reproduserer senere og får færre avkom, men til gjengjeld investerer de mer i sine avkom enn små dyrearter.

På grunn av det høye energibehovet har store dyrearter ofte stor innflytelse i et økosystem. De kan ha nøkkelroller i artssamfunn ved f.eks å konsumere en stor andel av produksjonen til artene som ligger et hakk lavere i næringsnettet. Dette kan i sin tur føre til kaskadeeffekter for andre arter. Dette gjelder både store rovdyr og store planteetere. Imidlertid er deres innvirkning i økosystemer ofte i konflikt med menneskelige interesser.

Mennesker er de mest innflytelsesrike store dyrene

Som mennesker representerer vi den mest innflytelsesrike av de store artene, ikke bare fordi vi utgjør 36% av all pattedyrs biomasse på jorden, men også fordi vi høster og utnytter andre arter på alle nivåer i næringsnettet, endrer naturlige habitater og forårsaker klimaendringer. Vi har utryddet eller redusert andre store dyrearter i det meste av verden fordi vi oppfattet dem som en trussel mot menneskers sikkerhet, konkurrenter til husdyrproduksjon, og som viltressurs. Vi har overhøstet bestander av store dyrearter i vårt behov for mat, skinn og trofeer. Vårt behov for plass og transport har ført til tap og fragmentering av habitat, med negative konsekvenser som uforholdsmessig påvirker vidtrekkende, store dyrearter. Forurensning fører til opphopning av giftige stoffer i langlivede arter, spesielt for de som er øverst i næringskjeden. Ikke overraskende har store pattedyr en høyere utryddelsesrisiko enn mindre pattedyrarter.

​Mennesker påvirker økosystemer også indirekte gjennom husdyrproduksjon. I dag utgjør husdyr, dominert av storfe, nærmere 60% av all pattedyrs biomasse på jorden. Disse store beitedyrene tar opp en stor andel av all planteproduksjon som forbrukes av planteetere på jorden og har endret jordens økosystemer, først fra høyt strukturerte skoger til næringsfattige, artsrike enger, og i nyere tid til næringsrike, artsfattige gressletter. Hvis holdt på utmark, kan husdyr påvirke ville arter og komme i konflikt med menneskelige interesser, for eksempel skogbruk eller bevaring av rovdyr.

Store dyr er truet

I lys av det stadig voksende menneskelige behovet for naturressurser og global oppvarming, er det et øyeblikkelig behov for forvaltningstiltak som kan balansere menneskelige behov og bevaring av store arter. For å lykkes, bør forvaltningstiltakene være kunnskapsbasert og tilpasningsdyktig. Forskning tilbyr et effektivt rammeverk for å forvalte ressurser i møte med usikkerhet. Denne læringsprosessen innebærer å vurdere påvirkningen av forvaltningstiltak, søke etter og systematisk teste nye og alternative tiltak, og justere tiltak basert på ny kunnskap og/eller endrede forhold. Anvendt på store dyrearter innebærer dette kontinuerlig overvåking av de aktuelle bestandene og konflikter mellom mennesker og dyr. Det krever også oppdatert kunnskap om økologien til de aktuelle artene eller bestandene, om faktorer som påvirker bestandsutvikling og levedyktighet, om romlig og tidsmessig variasjon av disse faktorene, og direkte og indirekte effekter av arten på andre arter.
