Health care structures in many countries are in many ways overwhelmed due to demographic changes, an increasingly multi-morbid society, lack of funding and lately the COVID pandemic - especially in the UK with one of lowest number of acute hospital beds and one of the lowest cancer survival rates in Europe. The NHS therefore explores new ways to deliver services digitally and/or with novel technologies. The NHS 5 Year Plan Review has also highlighted the desire for a more digitally enabled healthcare system. The COVID-19 lockdowns has brought a renewed prominence and highlighted the advantages that digital technology can have. Many government organisations acting fast to translate ‘in-person’ activities now online as a result of lockdown.
This talk introduces the structures of the British NHS and identifies current issues around bed blocking, long waiting lists linked to the insufficient rehabilitation infrastructure and compares this to other established and more robust rehab structures. It also identifies the potential of novel technology solutions in terms of accessibility issues to rehabilitation offers, patient adherence as well as education
of health care professionals and dissemnination. Examples of digital technology in a holistic rehabilitation process for Long COVID/COPD, cancer and orthopaedic rehabilitation will be presented to demonstrate opportunities and limitations.
