After receiving admission to a full-degree programme at INN

Once you have been admitted to a full-degree programme at INN, there are several important steps you need to take before arriving in Norway. This includes applying for accommodation, submitting a study permit application (if applicable), and completing other practical preparations.

How to gain access to your INN student account

We strongly urge you to complete the steps required to gain access to your student account before arriving at INN. This account is necessary for using Canvas (where you find information about your courses), applying for a student card, using the Eduroam WiFi, and using our other digital services.

For students new to Norway

If you do not have a Norwegian ID number, you will receive assistance with setting up your student account. You can also find detailed information about this process on INN's webpage for semester registration.

  1. Starting from mid-July, you will receive an email with an invoice for the semester fee. Please pay this fee as soon as possible through wireless transfer (note that international bank transfers may take 5–7 days).
    1. It is not possible to pay this in cash or by card at the University. You have to use wireless transfer.
  2. Once INN has received and registered your payment, you will receive the next email with your 6-digit student number and information about how and where to set a password for your student account.
  3. Once you have set the password, you have access to your student account and can log in to Canvas with FEIDE (student number and password).

Guides to accessing your student account

You must wait until you receive the email with your 6-digit student number from INN’s system (not from the International Office) before you can use the guides below. Please follow them in the presented order:

  1. Accessing your INN student account (PDF)
  2. Entering Studentweb (PDF)
  3. Entering Canvas & changing the language (PDF)

PowerPoint versions of the guides are available via the International Office.

If you have issues receiving a code on your phone

Some phone numbers have issues receiving the code to set a password. In this case, please apply for a Norwegian phone number quickly after arrival. Remember to inform the International Office of your new number so they can update your student profile. You will after a few days have the possibility to set a password on your student profile.

For students returning to INN

If you have previously been enrolled as a student at INN (no matter the campus), and were not registered with a Norwegian ID number, you will need assistance from the International Office. They will help with creating your semester fee invoice, completing your semester registration and activating your student account.

Make sure to contact the International Office of your new campus/faculty, preferably no later than the start of August, if you have yet to receive any information from the INN system by then. You can find the contact information on our webpage.

For students with a Norwegian ID number

You can also find detailed information about this process on INN's webpage under "New students".

  1. Starting from mid-July, you will receive an email from INN on how to log-in to Studentweb.
  2. In Studentweb, you have to create your semester fee invoice and complete the semester registration.
  3. Pay this fee as soon as possible through wireless transfer. It is not possible to pay this in cash or by card at the University.
  4. After the semester fee payment has been registered in the INN system (takes approximately 3-5 working days), you can activate your account.
  5. You will then have access to your student account, and can log in to Canvas with FEIDE (student number and password).

The document below can assist you when you first log in to Canvas after you have activated your student account.

Preparing for your stay in Norway

After receiving your admission, please make sure to familiarize yourself with the necessary preparations for your stay in Norway and start the required application processes as early as possible.

Academic calendar

The length of each semester depends on when your course lectures start and when exams are held. The semester dates vary from year to year but are within:

  • Autumn semester: Mid-August to approximately mid-December.
  • Spring semester: January to approximately mid-June.

Apply for accommodation

All international students have the option to apply for student accommodation through SINN housing or look for accommodation on the private market. You can read more about available options on our accommodation webpage.

Students who wish to live in private accommodation are responsible for finding housing themselves. The International Office is not able to assist with this process.

Please note that SINN has a limited number of family accommodations, and these are subject to availability.

Campus of admission

If you have been admitted to one of our English-taught degrees, you have been admitted to a specific campus.

Campus Evenstad

Campus Hamar

Campus Lillehammer

Course and exam schedules

The following guidelines can be followed without having access to the student account:

Course and exam schedules are usually published between June and July (for the autumn semester) and in December (for the spring semester). Please note that for Campus Evenstad, the exam schedules may be published later in the semester. Contact the International Office for further information.

After accessing the INN student account, course schedules can also be found in Canvas. In some cases, the Canvas room for your lecture might not be published until after the first lecture. It is therefore highly recommended that all exchange students check TP for the schedule of their first lectures.

Course registration

At INN, students register for courses one semester at a time. Each semester, you must complete your semester registration and pay the semester fee in order to be registered for your courses.

International students who do not yet have a Norwegian ID number will receive assistance from INN’s IT systems to access their account for the first time. The system will also register these students for their courses in the first (autumn) semester.

Curriculum (syllabus/reading list)

The library has a detailed webpage that explains where and how to find the reading lists for your course(s).

Health, travel and other insurances

All international students are required to have valid health insurance for the entire duration of their stay at INN. Travel insurance is also strongly recommended. Depending on your plans and activities (for example, mountain climbing, skiing or other high‑risk sports), you may need additional coverage.

You can find detailed information about required and recommended insurance on our insurance webpage.

Immigration before arrival

All non-EU/EEA citizens must apply for a study permit for their stay in Norway.

EU/EEA citizens do not need a study permit.

Detailed information on immigration before arrival can be found on our webpage.

Medication and vaccinations

Familiarise yourself with the rules and regulations regarding which medications are allowed to be brought to Norway and whether your stay requires any vaccinations. View our webpage for detailed information on medications and vaccinations.

Ordering a student access card and activating the student ID app

Student (access) card

After gaining access to your INN student account, you can order your student card. View the INN webpages for instructions on ordering the student access card and finding the 4-digit PIN.

The student access card is free of charge. It is not a valid student ID or a payment card. If there are any issues with your student access card application, you will receive a text message explaining the problem. Please translate the webpage if needed and reapply. If you need assistance, please visit the Servicepunkt/reception on campus.

At Campus Evenstad, the student card also serves as the access card for the student dorms. View the onboarding guide for detailed information.

Student ID - app

For identification (proof that you are a student), you need to download the "Studentbevis" app and sign in with your INN student account through FEIDE (student number and password). Further information on the Digital Student ID can be found on the SIKT webpage (external link).

The identification is only valid as long as you have a photo in the app. The image you submit when you order your access card will be added to your student ID profile.

Planning your arrival

How do you want to travel to Norway? By plane? By train and/or bus? Or do you want to come by car? What should you pack for your stay? There are several things to consider regarding your arrival. View our planning your arrival webpage for detailed information.

Special needs in everyday study situation

Do you have a disability, special need or illness that affects your everyday life as a student? If this is the case, you can apply for adaptation. View the INN webapge for special needs in everyday study situation. Remember the application deadline.

Adaptation at your SINN accomodation

If you are in need of adaptation at your SINN accommodation, it is very important that you inform SINN as soon as possible (preferably within March). SINN has a certain amount of homes with universal design in Elverum, Hamar and Lillehammer. In Evenstad, they try their best to accommodate according to the needs.

Special exam arrangements

If you need special exam arrangements for medical or other reasons, you can apply after receiving access to your student profile. Such arrangements can be extended time on an exam, use of assistive tools, physical workplace adjustments, etc. Remember the application deadline.

You must add valid documentation confirming your needs in English, Norwegian, Swedish, or Danish with your application. Additional information on special exam arrangements can be found on our exams webpage.

Start of your studies

You will receive detailed information by email about the start of your first semester at INN from your study programme. All new full-degree students will attend the starting programme, which consists of the INNStart programme and Fadderuka in the autumn semester.

View the information on orientation for additional details on this aspect.

Tuition fee (non-EU/EEA citizens only)

If you are a non-EU/EEA citizen, you must pay the tuition fee within the deadline set by the Admissions Office. General information about tuition fees is available on our tuition fee webpage.

Some non-EU/EEA students may be eligible for an exemption from the tuition fee. Please see our webpage for detailed information about possible exemptions and the applicable conditions.
