Short description

Trygve B. Broch is a professor of cultural sociology at the Department of Public Health and Sport Sciences. Cultural sociological perspectives characterize his work that features combinations of sociology, anthropology, and emotion-oriented social theory. With this backdrop he aims to creatively elucidate the complex intersections of elite, youth and children sports, as well as to theorize sport’s democratic affordances and reproduction of inequalities. Methodologically, Broch fuses media analyses with ethnographic methods to understand and explain how broadly available meanings are adopted and mediated in interaction.

Broch is a faculty fellow at the Center for Cultural Sociology at Yale University and part of The Civil Sphere Working Group. He served on the editorial board of the Gender & Society journal and was a guest editor of the special issue on sport in the American Journal of Cultural Sociology (2022).

In 2020, Broch published A performative feel for the game. How meaningful sports shape gender, bodies and social life (Palgrave Macmillan) that proposes a cultural sociological synthesis of anthropological and sociological theories of play, games and sports through the concept of performance. In 2023, Palgrave Macmillan printed The Ponytail: Icon, movement and the modern (sports)woman where Broch argues for a multidimensional study of the body as a material link between public and personal culture. Both books explores gendered (in)equalities and are published on the Cultural Sociology series. Broch’s current research highlights how codes, myths and rule-bound conduct generates solidarity and conflict when children and youth meet in sport contexts characterized by competition and hierarchy.
