Trygve B. Broch is an associate professor teaching cultural sociology in the Department of Public Health and Sport Sciences at Inland Norway University of Applied Sciences. He is a fellow at the Center for Cultural Sociology at Yale University and at The Moscow Culture Workshop at The HSE Moscow Center for Cultural Sociology. He is part of The Civil Sphere Working Group and serves on the editorial board of the Gender & Society journal. Broch’s main interest is to advance a meaning-centered study of physical activities, mental health, gender and democratic youth.
In 2020, he published A performative feel for the game. How meaningful sports shape gender, bodies and social life (Palgrave Macmillan). Joining a cultural sociology of performance with anthropological and sociological theory, the book exposes how sporting bodies allow us to play with and question inequality. Broch’s ongoing research aims to elucidate how codes, myths and narratives generate community and attraction as youth maneuver their increasingly unequal and rapidly changing societies.
