Short description
Thomas Macintyre is a researcher at the Centre for Collaborative Learning (CCL), which is part of Faculty of Education at Inland University in Norway (campus Hamar). He serves as Project Manager of the Strategic Planning Unit in the European University Alliance EMERGE (Work Package 1), where he works with institutional strategy, governance, and organisational learning across partner universities.
Thomas is a social scientist specialising in sustainability, social transformation, and higher education. His work explores how universities can act as transformative institutions in times of ecological and societal disjunction. He brings an interdisciplinary background spanning sociology, education, international development, and anthropology, and has extensive experience with participatory and transdisciplinary research methodologies.
His research focuses on, transformative and triple-loop learning processes, co-creation across sectors, and institutional capacity-building. He has led and contributed to several international projects funded by the European Union, UNESCO, Sida, and HK-dir, including work on citizen participation, transgressive learning, and academic exchange between Norway and Colombia.
Thomas is lead author of the Routledge volume Education and Learning for Sustainable Futures: 50 Years of Learning for Environment and Change (2025), which offers a landmark reflection on five decades of sustainability education and its evolving theoretical, pedagogical, and institutional foundations. The book situates contemporary sustainability challenges within a longer intellectual history of environmental learning and calls for more regenerative, systemic, and transformative approaches to education.
His earlier work includes research on regenerative decolonisation perspectives in sustainability education, transgressive social learning, and action research approaches that bridge community learning and higher education. His doctoral dissertation, The Transgressive Gardener, examined how learning processes can catalyse regenerative futures through experimental and boundary-crossing practices.
