Short description

Anstein Gregersen joined Inland Norway University of Applied Sciences in 2014 and is Associate Professor of Philosophy at the Inland School of Business and Social Sciences. His research is situated in philosophy of mind and aesthetics, with a particular focus on questions concerning embodiment, perception, and social understanding.

In recent years, Gregersen’s work has increasingly engaged with philosophy of disability. He is currently writing on social cognition and interaction in the case of persons with congenital deafblindness. This research explores how communication, shared attention, and interpersonal understanding are possible for people whose lives are structured by tactile rather than visual or auditory modes of experience. By examining congenital deafblindness, his work contributes both practically and theoretically: practically, by developing conceptual frameworks for understanding and shaping forms of interaction that support the social lives of persons with congenital deafblindness; and theoretically, by refining philosophical accounts of social cognition and contributing to broader discussions about normativity, inclusion, and the diversity of human communicative practices.

This article outlines a model of perceptual guidance that aims at giving a child with congenital dea8blindness perceptual access to the world, and in particular to the social world. It argues that we can closely interact with, and partially direct, a child’s exploration without instructing the child into culturally similar ways of exploring. Perceptual guidance has two facets. The 8irst is a bodily dimension where child and partner interact so that they create a joint bodily orientation to the world. The second is that partner and child show each other ways of organizing their overlapping perceptual 8ield with arms and hands. This showing bears close resemblance to how we judge and discuss aesthetic matters. As in aesthetics, there is not a given correct procedure for exploring and judging, but an effort at creating community through showing each other how we experience the world. This gives the child access to the social world without purporting that this is the only correct way of exploring. The article ends with two practice examples of perceptual guidance, which additionally shows two ways of spatially organizing the perceptual 8ield.

Congenital deafblindness (CDB) profoundly affects perception of the environment. CDB can affect both which objects are perceived, and which features of the objects are experienced. In order to gain better access to the environment and the social world, it could therefore potentially be beneficial if a child with CDB was perceptually directed by a seeing and hearing person. However, such a form of intervention is not unproblematic. This article argues that such a perceptual guidance is only acceptable if the leading in perception is agency sensitive and contains three features: that of joint perception; a culturally sensitive organization of perceptual fields, and a dynamic back-and-forth mode of leading and exploring.

In deafblind studies it is commonly and usefully advised that partners interact close and face-to-face with children with congenital deafblindness. While recognizing face-to-face as an important mode of interaction this paper advances the simple idea that an equally important form of togetherness is body-with-body. Body-with-body interactions are here understood as Interactions where two bodies are aligned with each other: the paradigmatic form is where the back of the child is aligned with the stomach and chest of his partner. I argue that this mode of togetherness can enable agency for a child with CDB through making as good as possible the conditions for perception and cognition. The body-with-body mode will make possible perception of the partners body in action; perception of some of the partners emotions; enable joint attention; enable skill acquisition and use of equipment, and finally enhance distal perception.
