Short description

Aleksander Bern Ph.D. is a senior researcher at the Eastern Norway Research Institute. He earned his Ph.D. in Human Geography from the University of Oslo. His thesis “The socio-spatial politics of architectural competitions in urban redevelopment: competitions in the Fjord City, Oslo” analyses the use of architectural competitions their use and their politics, as well as their impact on planning and how it interacts with the ideals of democratic planning. Aleksander is a specialist in both qualitative methods and in geographic information systems. He has a lot of experience with large and complicated data sets, such as cadastral data and has very good knowledge of public statistics and map data. Most of his projects are based on a triangulation of methods and data.

He is the project manager for the Norwegian part of the HORIZON EU project ESIRA, which is about social inclusion of vulnerable groups. He is also part of the RURALPLAN project, funded by EU’s ESPON program.

Research interests include: urban and regional development and planning, architecture, housing, urbanism and urbanization, representations, democracy and participation, digitalization and social sustainability
