    What we research

Videographic essayism can be defined as audiovisual artistic research where interdisciplinary practices combine artistic exploration and academic reflection through the use of cinematic and audiovisual media. This form of research examines how the video essay, as a hybrid of art and science, can serve as a medium for both aesthetic expression and knowledge production.

The videoessay often functions as a critical and creative dialogue between theory and practice, providing space for experimentation with narrative structure, visual composition, and soundscapes. Our goal is to use the format to reflect on our own creative activities and to generate new insights and understandings through an integrated approach to research and artistic production.

    More about the research group

The group has the following ambitions:

    • The research group will meet twice per semester (four times a year). One of these meetings will be dedicated to an external expert who will be invited to share their professional insights with us. The other meeting will be reserved for presentations of ongoing work within the group.
    • During 2025, the research group will announce an open call in Norway/the Nordic region where colleagues will be invited to submit their videoessays for inclusion in a publication/anthology, which could be published in, for example, the Research Catalogue or another platform.
