Short description

The Pro-Rector for Education has the overall strategic and administrative responsibility for all educational activities at the university. He heads the Division of Educational Affairs and collaborates closely with the leadership of the faculties, especially with the vice-deans for education. He is also responsible for facilitating student democracy and works closely with student representatives.

Background

Vebjørn L. Horsfjord is a theologian and religious studies scholar. He holds a PhD (2015) from the University of Oslo where he was a research fellow and then a postdoc from 2011 to 2018. In the period 2018 to 2023, he was an associate professor and, from 2019, a professor of religion, philosophies and ethics at INN's Faculty of Education. From 2023 to 2026, he was dean of the Faculty of Theology and Social Sciences at VID Specialized University.

Horsfjord's research and academic interest are related to contemporary religion and the intersection between religion and society. His PhD thesis was about international interreligious dialogue. He has also researched the influence of the Russian Orthodox Church in Russian society, including its role in the war in Ukraine. From 2021 to 2026, he participated in the NFR-funded research project FAITHED («Non-formal religious education, the public school and religious minorities in Norway), which was linked to INN's Faculty of Education. He worked in particular with religious education in Muslim religious communities in Norway.

Horsfjord has extensive research and teaching experience. He has published five books, including both scholarly works and a textbook in religion and ethics for upper secondary schools.

This chapter draws on fieldwork and interviews in mosques and Catholic churches in Norway, exploring faith education. We ask how Muslim and Catholic minority communities in Norway organize and structure their faith education, how teachers function as role models, and how transnational ties are reflected in teach‍ ing approaches and materials. First, we focus on teaching materials and teaching approaches used and adopted by the volunteer teachers, including how transnational ties emerge. Second, we discuss the teachers’ understanding of role modeling in a faith education setting. Third, drawing on the above, we apply Biesta’s concepts of qualification, socialization, and subjectification to discuss the purpose and broader relevance of faith education in Muslim and Catholic faith communities in Norway.

This chapter explores the teaching approaches and materials in mosque schools in Norway, highlighting how Islamic supplementary education is organized and adjusted to the specific context where it is arranged. Drawing on observations and interviews from four mosques, the study shows how diverse teaching approaches are taking place in mosque schools: from Quranic recitation and memorization to interactive and context-sensitive methods influenced by Norwegian educational practices. Teachers adapt transnational pedagogical traditions while addressing local challenges, such as limited resources, mixed prior knowledge among students, and the need for culturally relevant, yet legitimate teaching materials. The findings reveal mosque schools as dynamic spaces where Islamic traditions are negotiated within a Norwegian context, fostering religious competence, ethical understanding, and a sense of belonging among Muslim youth. Mosque schools act as hubs of cultural transmission, where teachers help students navigate both Islamic tradition and Norwegian context.

The leader of the Russian Orthodox Church, Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and all Rus, has correctly been seen as a staunch supporter of the Russian full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. However, explicit statements of support for the war are rare in his public sermons and speeches, and it is worth exploring the mechanisms of his support in some detail. The article presents an analysis of all the patriarch’s sermons and speeches between February 2022 and February 2023 and shows how the patriarch uses references to history to nurture a worldview that makes the war both legitimate and necessary. Using Duncan Bell’s notion of a mythscape, the author argues that Kirill infuses secular history with divine meaning in order to give indirect divine legitimation for the war in Ukraine. He further relates this to Stoeckl’s contention that the Russian Orthodox Church’s promotion of so-called traditional values functions as civil religion for today’s Russia and suggests that Kirill’s use of history nurtures this civil religion further.

Denne artikkelen er basert på observasjoner og intervjuer gjort på fire islamskoler i Norge. På disse ikke-formelle trosopplæringsarenaene finner vi spenninger og forhandlinger mellom muslimske normative idealer og hverdagslivets faktiske praksiser og tenkemåter. Vi finner at både moskeledere og foreldre knyttet til disse fellesskapene ønsker å styrke normative tolkninger av islam, samtidig som det er en betydelig anerkjennelse av og aksept for at idealene ikke nødvendigvis etterleves. Informantene framhever verdien av å møtes fysisk til undervisning i en tid med mange online-tilbud. Forfatterne benytter levd hverdagsreligions-perspektivet sammen med blant annet begrepet maksimalistisk islam

The authors presented in this volume deal with important cases of Protestantization of religion or of debates on religion. One chapter deals with Protestant formatting of contemporary Islam, another discusses how Pentecostal Protestantism has an important role in formatting religion outside Europe today. Two of the authors analyse contemporary debates on circumcision and investigate how Protestant preconceptions influence these debates. Finally, several authors deal with the complex question of how Protestant religion is related to modern Secularity: either as a point of departure for “non-religion”, or as a point of departure for a Protestant understanding of secularity.

I en veileder om religionsmøte ved kirkelige handlinger fra 2016 understreker Bispemøtet i Den norske kirke at kirken skal møte dem som tilhører andre religioner, som likeverdige og med gjestfrihet. Samtidig anbefales en restriktiv praksis når det gjelder å åpne kirken for andre religioners ritualer. Artikkelen problematiserer bruken av «gjestfrihet» som modell for religionsmøte både i biskopenes veileder og i andre tekster. Som et alternativ eller supplement foreslår forfatteren at tanken om et «gjestebud» bedre kan få fram et ideal om likeverd uten påtvunget likhet. Artikkelen problematiserer også Bispemøtets mangel på eksplisitt refleksjon om hvilke verdier som formidles gjennom ulike rituelle handlinger

The document A Common Word Between Us and You was published by a broad range of Muslim leaders and scholars in October 2007. Focussing on the twin commandment to love God and neighbour, it invited Christian leaders to engage in dialogue. Many Church leaders eagerly embraced the invitation, and in the subsequent years, the Muslim initiative bore fruits in the form of numerous Muslim-Christian conferences and cooperative projects across the world involving a broad range of Christians from Orthodox to Evangelicals. It has inspired interreligious cooperation beyond the Muslim-Christian axis and can continue to do so in the years to come.

Rituell omskjæring av guttebarn debatteres i mange europeiske land. Norge fikk for første gang en særskilt lov om rituell omskjæring av gutter i 2015. Diskusjoner om forbud har skapt skarpe debatter i blant annet Danmark og Island, og en tysk rettsinstans fastslo at rituell omskjæring var ulovlig, før Forbundsdagen vedtok en lov som eksplisitt tillot inngrepet. Europarådets parlamentarikerforsamling uttalte seg mot omskjæring, men daværende generalsekretær Thorbjørn Jagland gjorde det umiddelbart klart at et forbud ikke er Europarådets politikk. Den norske debatten likner den som går ellers i Europa og handler om helsefordeler og –ulemper, skjæring i kjønnsorganer, jøders framtid i landet, antisemittisme, islamfrykt, barns samtykkekompetanse og religionsfrihet. Disse temaene og flere til diskuteres på kryss og tvers av en rekke ulike aktører. Ser man nærmere på argumentasjonen, framstår det som om det er like stor uenighet om hva omskjæringsdebatten «egentlig» handler om – hva som er den riktige innrammingen av diskusjonen – som i synet på om omskjæring bør tillates eller ikke. I denne artikkelen presenterer jeg en kvantitativ innholdsanalyse av tekster om rituell omskjæring av gutter fra 12 norske aviser i en fireårsperiode. Hovedspørsmålene som undersøkes er: Hvilke ulike tolkningsrammer (framinger) for spørsmål om omskjæring forekommer i debatten; hvordan er forholdet mellom tolkningsramme, aktør og holdning til omskjæring; og hva betyr de ulike tolknings-rammene for debatten? Blant de interessante funnene er at det er en stor og systematisk forskjell på tekster som forstår omskjæring som et spørsmål primært knyttet til jøder og tekster som knytter omskjæring til muslimer, de to gruppene som praktiserer rituell omskjæring i Norge. Et annet funn er at mange som diskuterer omskjæring, gjør det uten henvisning til religiøse tradisjoner overhodet. Jeg vil gå fram slik: Etter å ha redegjort for materialet og metoden vil jeg presentere overordnede tendenser i materialet. Deretter vil jeg se på sammenhengen mellom ulike innramminger og holdningen til omskjæring. Jeg legger først vekt på slike innramminger og argumenter som hovedsakelig bygger opp om en positiv holdning til å tillate omskjæring, for deretter å se på slike som taler imot. I siste del av artikkelen vil jeg se etter forklaringer på noen av funnene blant annet med henvisning til andre norske undersøkelser og ikke minst analyser av omskjæringsdebatten i Tyskland

Nesten fem århundrer med statlig lutherdom har satt store avtrykk på norsk kultur. Årets reformasjonsjubileum har gitt anledning til grundige analyser av dypstrukturene i denne protestantiske påvirkningen. Men det kan også være interessant å gjøre en mindre dyptpløyende analyse, å bevege seg på protestantismens overflate, ikke for å jakte på dens kulturformende kraft, men snarere for å se etter den populære oppfatningen av protestantismen. I denne lille undersøkelsen spør jeg etter hvordan klisjeen «protestantisk» og «protestant» brukes i norsk offentlighet: Hva inneholder den, hvilket arbeid utfører den og likner den det teologien og religionsvitenskapen forbinder med protestantisme?
