Short description

Lars Fredrik Øksendal is an economic historian specialising in monetary history and financial history. A history graduate from NTNU (2001), he received his doctorate in economic history/economics from NHH (2008) on a dissertation on Norwegian central banking before the Great War. Following a stint as postdoctoral fellow at the same institution, Øksendal worked as a senior adviser in Norges Bank for five years. Later stops have been the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs, the Oslo Stock Exchange and lately Sparebankstiftelsen DNB. He joined the department in May 2022.

As an economic historian, Øksendal has been particularly interested in the interplay between international regimes and small state adjustments. This is reflected not only in his writing on monetary policy, but also in his work on Norway in the European financial diplomacy of the early post-war period as well as domestic wage formation. In addition to a number of articles in peer reviewed journals and anthologies (see publication list for details) Øksendal has co-authored or written as single author four monographies: A monetary history of Norway 1816-2016 (Cambridge UP, 2016), Modellbyggere. Det tekniske beregningsutvalg for inntektsoppgjørene, 1967-2017 (Pax, 2017), BØRSEN. Markedsplass og møteplass, 1819-2019 (Universitetsforlaget, 2019) og Til allmenn nytte. Om gaver, sparebanker og sparebankstiftelser gjennom 200 år (Universitetsforlaget, forthcoming 2022).

Øksendal is currently pondering on the importance of the past for the future of money. &
