About the programme

The courses are an accredited part of an internship programme, where you will actively participate and contribute to current research projects in the UPEXRE research group at The Game School within the Faculty of Film, TV and Games. Most internships are carried out at campus Hamar.

You will participate in game development and game production as well as different aspects of research in user experience. The internship course requires participation on campus for a minimum of 2 months. At the end of the period, the students will write a final report, describing the work they have done and learning outcomes gained during the internship.

We offer two different courses at bachelor level with either 15 ECTS (course code: SPI1000) or 30 ECTS (course code: SPI1001), and two different courses at master level with either 15 ECTS (course code: SPI4000) or 30 ECTS (SPI4001). Stays between 8-12 weeks generate 15 ECTS, while stays over 3 months generate 30 ECTS.

Students enrolled in partner universities at the bachelor level or master level will meet the requirements of the respective courses offered.

Application deadline and admission

Who can apply?

Practice in game development and production is a course that is offered throughout the calendar year. However, availability of positions depends on ongoing research projects and the need for different competencies within the development team.

To enter the study module, it is required that the student meet the following requirements. Students should:

For more information about eligibility for exchange studies at the University of Inland Norway (INN), please contact the university's exchange coordinator or international office.

What are the admission requirements?

The students must document the completion of at least one year at a university or university college in a related field to enter the study module. For the module at the master level, students must meet the requirements for master level courses at their home university.

How do I apply?

By submitting an electronic application form on our website. Based on this form, your inquiry will be forwarded to the correct research group(s)/supervisor(s) for further assessment.

Practical questions about the internship

When and for how long can I do my internship?

The courses run all year. The number of available internships depends on the particular conditions of each project.

What kind of work will I do during my internship?

The content of the internship will vary from depending on the project. Some will work occur mainly in the lab or conducting literature studies, and some, a combination of these. The plan for your internship should be clearly stated in the training agreement.

Is the internship paid work?

No, the internship is organised as an academic course with ECTS.

Will INN provide insurance during the internship?

No, all students must ensure they have their own insurance coverage through their home institution or arrange this on their own.

The European Health Card officially documents that you are entitled to coverage of medically necessary health care under the same conditions as Norwegian citizens.

Will I receive ECTS for my internship?

Yes, if you complete your internship as planned and your final report is approved.

8 - 12 weeks internship will provide 15 ECTS, while stays over 3 months generate 30 ECTS.

Please note that the course is evaluated with passed/not passed. Supervisors are free to give a suggested grade if required.

What about accommodation?

Most internships are carried out in at campus Hamar. You will receive information about how and when to apply for accommodation on campus from the international coordinator. For internships portions located off-campus, the supervisor and student will agree on the arrangements for this.

Can I choose the content of my internship myself?

The project supervisor is free to evaluate all applicants and accept the one(s) they find most suitable for a particular project or work packages within a project (based on previous studies, field experience, etc.).

Can I work with different projects during my internship?

Yes, if this is a preference of the intern as is approved by the supervisor. Otherwise, students often work on one project at the time with the same supervisor.

What is the expected workload for my internship?

Exactly how the internship is organised will vary from project to project. Some have regular working hours Monday-Friday, some projects may have more intensive working periods (also weekends and evenings). This will, of course, be compensated with equivalent days off. One workday during a weekend resulting in 1.5 days off as compensation. It is expected that you will work approximately 37.5 hours per week. Further details must be agreed upon with the supervisor.

What is expected of me during my internship?

  • To be punctual and follow agreements on what to do and where to be.
  • To hand in the final report (see own guidelines) within 3 weeks after fulfilling the internship.
  • To be flexible when needed due to weather, climate, human resources and other unpredicted incidents that may occur

What can I expect from my supervisor and INN?

  • One permanent main supervisor that will be in charge for your agreement, training and evaluation.
  • To receive a transcript of records and/or evaluation form (upon agreement) within 3 weeks after submitting the final report.

Can I write my thesis (or any other assignment) based on the data I collect during my internship?

Yes, under certain conditions:

  • This must be clarified and approved by your supervisor prior to the internship.
  • This should also be mentioned in the training agreement.
  • Your home university will assess the thesis. You cannot gain any ECTS from INN for this work (more than 15 or 30 ECTS for the course R&D in XR for UX studies).
  • Your main supervisor must be from your home university. Your project supervisor at INN may assist with parts directly related to data from the project but is not obliged to provide help during the entire process of writing your thesis. This must also be clarified in advance, with your supervisor, both at INN and your home university.

What about other assignments/reports required by my home university?

Lately, we have experienced that many partner institutions require internship reports from their students. Some of these reports are quite comprehensive and require a lot of background information about INN as a receiving institution (e.g. history, strategy, statistical numbers, etc.). Some of this information is easily accessible on our web site, but unfortunately, not all documents are available in English. The supervisors or the international coordinators do not always have the time or recourses to translate or provide all this information to each student and their respective institutions. We hope your home institutions can sympathise with this.

Can I combine the internship with other studies at campus Hamar?

The course in R&D in XR for UX studies is considered a full-time study and should be your number one priority during your stay. We do not recommend following courses concurrent with your internship. Still, all lectures given on campus are open for all students, and if there is no time conflict, you may attend classes if you would like to.
