What to remember
Here are some important things to remember if you are staying two semesters at INN.
Become an international Buddy
All exchange students can be an international Buddy in their second semester. What an International Buddy does may differ from campus to campus. Contact the International Office for more information and how to sign up.
Course registration and schedules
Course registration
Students can only be registered for courses one semester at a time. Course registration happens:
- Autumn semester: Between July and August.
- Spring semester: Between December and January.
The International Office will ensure that you are signed up for courses according to your LA/OLA. If you wish to change courses, contact the International Office in your campus as soon as possible. Some courses (e.g. in Lillehammer) may have limited spots.
Course and exam schedules
The course and exam schedules are only published for one semester at a time. They are published around:
- Autumn semester: Between June and July.
- Spring semester: Between December and early January.
Be aware that Campus Evenstad has a different deadline for announcing the exam dates. Information will be given directly by the International Office to students to whom it is relevant.
Extending the exchange
If you want to extend your exchange with us, that may or may not be possible. It depends on the courses offered at INN, what your home institution says and if the campus has available places.
It is recommended that you do the following:
- Figure out whether an extension is possible:
- Book an appointment with the International Office to discuss a possible extension. This includes looking at possible courses.
- Talk with your home institution about the possibilities.
- If you are an Erasmus+/EEA/Norway Grant/SEMP student, be aware that it is up to your home institution whether an extension with/without a grant is possible.
- If your home institution does not extend your grant period, you need to finance the stay yourself. INN does not provide grants.
- If you are a student from one of our partners outside of Europe, and the home institution does not agree to extend your stay as an exchange student, you will become a study abroad student/freemover.
- Non-EU/EEA citizens without grant, or as study abroad students/freemovers, must pay tuition fee for the semester they wish to extend.
- If you are an Erasmus+/EEA/Norway Grant/SEMP student, be aware that it is up to your home institution whether an extension with/without a grant is possible.
- Your home institution must send a confirmation e-mail to the International Office at INN approving your extension.
- If an extension is possible:
- Submit your updated LA/OLA as soon as possible. The International Office will sign you up for your courses when possible.
- If you wish to continue renting accommodation through SINN, the International Office will notify the SINN Housing Office that you will stay an additional semester. You will then need to contact them directly. SINN Housing Office will inform you of what you must do (e.g., sign a new contract with them).
- If your ID card/Passport is expiring within less than six months of your planned stay, after adding the extension, apply for a new one.
- Get the updated admission documents from INN confirming your extension.
- Specific information per nationality:
- Non-EU/EEA citizens must apply for a residence permit renewal. Please see the information below.
- EU/EEA citizens should go to the Tax Office for an ID check and to register a move to Norway. Nordic citizens (Finnish, Danish, Swedish, and Icelandic) MUST report a move to Norway at the Tax Office.

Deadlines
Be aware that extending the exchange should be done before mid-April (to extend to the autumn semester) and mid-October (to extend to the spring semester) due to the housing application deadline.
Renewal of study permit (only non-EU/EEA citizens)
Non-EU/EEA students who wish to prolong their exchange at INN with an additional semester must apply for a study permit renewal. The International Office at INN and the home institution must first approve a prolongment. In addition, students must deposit the needed funds into the INN Deposit account or their Norwegian bank account to gain the financial confirmation. This is needed to apply for a study permit renewal.
View the webpage of the Norwegian Directorate of Immigration (UDI) for detailed information on the renewal process you will need to follow after getting the approval of your home institution and INN (external link).
Semester registration
Students enrolled in two or more semesters must complete a semester registration during their second semester. The International Office will complete the registration for you. Exchange students from our partners are not required to pay the semester fee during their exchange.
Semester registration dates
Semester registration happens within the following dates:
- Autumn semester: 01st of July to 01st of September.
- Spring semester: 1st of December to 15th of January.
If you notice that you have not been registered a week or so before the deadline, contact the International Office at your campus.
Special exam arrangements
If you did not apply for special exam arrangements on exams in both semesters or if you have been granted an extension, you will need to submit a new application for facilitation on exams. Remember the deadline for your second semester.
You can read more on special exam arrangements on the Exam Office's webpage.
Transcript of Records from your first semester
INN only issues Transcript of Records at the end of a student's stay. If you want to receive one from your first semester, contact the International Office in your campus and pick it up at the Office.
View the information on how to get your Transcript at the end of your exchange on our webpage.
