Goals and Focus Areas

The goal of the research group is to build research constellations and methodologies for measuring engagement and affect in XR experiences. The aim is to aid and inform the design process and outcomes of XR applications in both art and science.

The UPEXRE research group consists of colleagues from the Faculty of Film, TV and Games, International partners, Research fellows and interns. Together, we explore relationships between design, user engagement and experience in XR-designs and applications. This entails developing and testing digital games and forms of applied game design in different fields.

Our team represents a wide range of expertise from game design, programming and AI to VR, AR, and spatial computing.  With focus on user perception, game design and participatory media, we run several case studies with external partners. We actively seek difficult design challenges to test the outer limits of game design and game design technologies, in areas of artistic expression and in societal challenges.

    What we research

We develop and explore game design and participatory media forms in areas such as:

    • Artistic projects and interventions
    • Worldbuilding
    • System dynamics
    • Ecological design & affordances
    • Applied game design (often called “Serious games”)
    • Perception in XR experiences such as VR, AR & Spatial computing
