Student health, counselling services, crisis and emergency preparedness
Here are some advice and tips on how crises and other challenging situations should be handled.
Sikresiden.no
INN has an agreement with Sikresiden.no (external link). The web page provides information on how to prevent a crisis, and what to do when a crisis occurs.
Emergency information
If you are in urgent need of help, please call 113 (emergency number).
Dentist appointments
Public dental clinics
The public dental health system offers discounts for those aged 19 to 28 (and the entire year they are 28) enabling them to pay only 25% of the price (a 75% discount).
- This offer is also valid for exchange and full-degree students with EU/EEA nationalities.
- Students with a non-EU/EEA nationality must have lived in Norway for 5 consecutive years to benefit from this offer.
The discount applies only to necessary treatment at a public dental clinic, not to private dental clinics or cosmetic dental treatments.
- The dental treatment rates at the public dental offices can be found on the website of the municipality (external link).
- Get an overview of all public dental clinics in Norway on the website of the municipality (external link).
- Read more about rules and regulations on the website of the Norwegian Directorate of Health (in Norwegian) (external link).
If the dental clinic says that you (EU/EEA citizen) cannot get the discount
Most public dental clinics might not be up to date with the current regulations regarding this. If they say that you cannot get the discount, do the following:
- Refer to the "Tannhelsetjenesteloven" (Dental Health Services Act in English) at Helsedirektoratet. Visit the website of the Dental Health Service Act (external link).
- For dental treatment from ages 19 to 28, refer to the following:
- "Botidskrav for personer med midlertidig oppholdstillatelse gjelder ikke for personer som er omfattet av en gjensidighetsavtale med en annen stat, herav EU/EØS borgere". In English: "The residence period requirements for persons with a temporary residence permit do not apply to persons who are covered by a reciprocity agreement with another state, including EU/EEA citizens." The Dental Health Service Act for the ages from 19 to 28 (external link).
Private dental clinics
Private clinics usually offer a student discount of 10%-20% (varies by clinic). Please use Google or another search engine to find dental clinics (tannklinikk in Norwegian).
Fire safety
Do you know what to do if a fire breaks out while you are at campus? Read about it on INN's webpage for fire safety for students.
General doctor's appointment
All municipalities in Norway have an Emergency scheme for immediate health care around the clock and a system for visitors/tourists/students who have not been assigned a family doctor (General Practitioner) in their location of residence. These appoinments are usually at the Emergency Ward.
However, not all municipalities offer general doctor's appointments to international students staying 1 semester or shorter, or to those waiting to get a Norwegian ID number.
The Doctor's Offices are open Monday-Friday between 08:00/09:00 - 15:00/16:00. Students are assigned a General Practitioner when they receive their Norwegian Identity Number.
Important information
All international students (as well as Norwegian residents) have to pay a fixed part of the cost of public health services, called patient charges (between 150 and 350 NOK), which is non-refundable. This applies to both medical treatment and purchasing prescribed medicines.
Emergency numbers
- Fire brigade: 110
- Police: 112
- Emergency: 113
- Only for those with impaired hearing: 1412
- INN's emergency number (open 24/7): (+47) 04315. Operated by the Securitas Head Office in Oslo. When receiving a call, they will immediately notify the contact person for the relevant INN Crisis Group.
- Ambulant emergency unit mental health (Hamar, Elverum): (+47) 62 58 18 88
In an acute crisis, the police, fire and ambulance must always be notified before INN.
Help 113 app
Have you downloaded the Norwegian Air Ambulance Foundation's app? If you have an emergency and need to call 110, 112 or 113, do so through the app. It will provide them with your accurate location, as long as you have cell service.
Information on downloading this app (only in Norwegian) can be found on the Norwegian Air Ambulance Foundation's web page (external link). Drop by the International Office for assistance.
When to call INN's emergency number
If you find yourself in an emergency, contact the fire brigade, police or emergency service before reaching out to INN. You can contact the International Office and/or the international buddies (depending on campus) directly or reach out to INN's emergency number if that is not possible.
Urgent health care
The Emergency Ward is open Monday-Friday from 16:00-08:00 and offers 24-hour service on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. Non-Norwegian phone numbers may experience issues while dialling +47 116117. International students should therefore call the Emergency Ward closest to themselves directly on the following number:
- Elverum: (+47) 62 41 15 00
- Evenstad (Stor-Elvdal): (+47) 62 46 34 00
- Hamar: (+47) 62 53 19 00
- Lillehammer: (+47) 61 26 64 30
Please be aware that the patient charges are often higher at the Emergency Ward.
Mandatory Tuberculosis screening
Norwegian law requires that students (foreign citizens) residing in Norway for more than three months take a tuberculosis screening (external link). This is free of charge and applies to students from countries with a high risk of tuberculosis (external link).
How to get an appointment
Only certain students are required to take a tuberculosis screening:
- Students from the following EU/EEA countries: Romania.
- All students from non-EU/EEA countries, except Switzerland, USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Japan.
A couple of weeks after you have completed your Police Appointment, you will receive an invitation directly from the health services closest to your campus. This invite will come to you by email or regular post. It might end up in your SPAM box, so make sure to check it regularly.
The examination is done at a local health station (Norwegian: helsestasjon). Please remember to bring a valid passport/ID card to the appointment. If you cannot meet at the appointed time, you must cancel with at least 24 hours' notice. If you do not show up at the appointed time without cancelling, you will receive a bill in the mail.
Positive results
If students test positive for tuberculosis, it will not affect their stay in Norway. If necessary, they will be offered free control and treatment.
