Using AI in Exams

Familiarize yourself with the rules for the use of artificial intelligence during exams.

AI can be a useful tool, also in connection with exams. On the other hand, use of AI in violation of the rules may lead to you being suspected of cheating.

It is your responsibility to be familiar with the regulations. Here you will find answers to some common questions. If you are in doubt, you must contact the course coordinator for your study program. Our librarians can also answer many questions about, among other things, the use of sources and referencing.

Two rules of thumb

  • Read the assignment text carefully! Are all aids permitted? If so, that also applies to artificial intelligence.

  • If aids are permitted, you should expect to be able to document your use of the tool. All use of AI should be transparent, so that others can see where, and how, you have used it.

Common questions and answers

Here you get answers to some of the questions you may have about what is allowed and what is not allowed when it comes to exams and the use of AI.

Can I use AI during exam?

It completely depends on the rules for each individual exam.

Which aids are permitted during the exam is clearly stated in the assignment. Read the exam assignment text carefully.

If all aids are permitted, that also includes artificial intelligence.

Can AI do the entire exam for me?

No. See the question below.

If the exam rules state that you are allowed to use AI as an aid, you may not generate an answer using AI and submit it in whole or in part as your own work.

There are several reasons for this. When you study in academia, independent thinking is required.

In addition, we must remember that AI does not take into account what is correct or true. The text may therefore contain errors, misleading, or biased information. It is also a violation of the regulations to present someone else’s work and wording as your own – this also applies to AI.

You may be required to explain how you have used AI, even in cases where you do not directly reproduce content from such tools.

What can I actually use AI for during the exam?

Generative AI (such as chatbots that create text) can be used as a tool, but not as a source of facts.

Unless the assignment text specifies limitations on the use of aids, you may use AI tools. Here are some examples of how you can potentially use generative AI tools:

  • as a discussion partner at the start of an assignment to get an overview of a new topic, theory, or concept
  • to simplify or narrow down a research question
  • to generate more search terms based on your research question, which you can then use to find verifiable sources in search engines like Google Scholar and subject databases
  • to proofread your text with regard to spelling and grammar
  • to give feedback on content and structure
  • to translate text from another language
  • to generate programming code

Do I have to list AI as a source?

First and foremost: In the assignment you must refer to academic sources. These sources must be verifiable, meaning that they can be found again by others. Chatbots produce texts without real, responsible authors, and the texts are therefore neither reliable nor verifiable.

Plagiarism – that is, presenting other people’s work and wording as your own without citing the source – is not allowed. This also applies to AI-generated texts.

If you have used AI as a tool, you may be asked to state the name of the AI tool and how you have used it in your text. This can be written in the methods section or the preface of the assignment. For example:

"In this assignment, I have used Sikt AI-chat to correct grammar and writing errors."

If you have written a text about AI or about an AI-generated text, you must instead include both an in-text citation to the AI tool and a corresponding reference in the reference list. For example:

"When I asked Sikt AI-chat ‘Is the distinction between the left and right hemispheres of the brain real or just a metaphor?’ it replied that ‘The idea that people can be predominantly governed by the left or right hemisphere is an oversimplification and a popular myth’ (Sikt, 2025)."

Can I use ChatGPT?

We recommend that our students and staff use the generative AI tools Sikt KI or GPT-UiO. These are tools similar to ChatGPT, but they safeguard privacy and data security, which ChatGPT and other tools do not.

What is considered cheating in exams?

Exam answers and other written submissions are required to be independently produced work.

The following, among other things, is considered cheating or attempted cheating during exams:

  • having unauthorized aids available during the exam
  • using authorized aids in a way that violates the rules
  • presenting someone else’s work as your own
  • presenting content that has been produced using artificial intelligence or otherSe universitetets retningslinjer om hva som regnes som fusk på eksamen technology as your own work

You must also avoid sharing sensitive data or personal information. It is therefore recommended that you only use INN’s recommended AI tools, which safeguard data security.

Who is responsible for making sure I know the rules?

It is your own responsibility as a student to familiarize yourself with the regulations for the use of aids, both AI and others, and with correct use of sources in order to avoid cheating.

The University of Inland Norway expects all students to take responsibility for learning correct source use. This means that you as a student must learn the correct referencing techniques within your field, and actively seek help if you need it.

What happens if I am suspected of breaking the rules?

Violations of the rules for a given exam and violations of the rules on source referencing are considered cheating, and may lead to the exam or assignment being annulled and to you being suspended and losing your right to take exams for a period.

I am still unsure, where can I get answers?

If you are in doubt, you must contact your teacher/course coordinator. Our librarians can also answer many questions.
