In case of cheating or attempted cheating, strict measures will be taken by INN University. It is therefore important that you, as a student, take the time to familiarize yourself with the rules for using examination aids and the rules for correct source usage and quotation. The rules regarding cheating also apply to submissions constituting the right to take examinations (compulsory activities). The provisions on cheating can be found in the Regulations on admissions, studies and examinations at INN, chapter 9
What is considered cheating?
The following are considered as cheating or attempted cheating:
- having unpermitted aids available during the examination
- using permitted aids in an unregulated way
- presenting the work of others as his/her own
- presenting content that has been produced by using artificial intelligence or other technology as his/her own work
- reproducing content from sources without adequate source references
- providing fictious sources, informants or data
- reusing content from their own passed examination answers or approved compulsory activities without disclosing this
- obtaining access to the examination by cheating in a compulsory activity, or by obtaining approval for participation in a compulsory activity on incorrect grounds.
- preparing answers to individual exams together, or in some other way participate in irregular collaboration.
Supplementary rules may be used in individual examinations.
References for all used sources must be provided. Transcription or copying without source reference is considered cheating. What you deliver must be created in the exam situation and extensive reuse of previously submitted work is not recommended. If you reuse content from your own passed exam answers and approved compulsory activities without stating that this is your own work, it can be considered cheating. The Citation Compass provides guidance on how to refer without violation of anonymity.
On exams or work requirements where all aids are permitted, artificial intelligence (typing robot, ChatGPT etc.) will also be a legal aid, as a tool. If, on the other hand, you present machine-generated claims, statistics, arguments, ideas, works of art, coding or similar as your own in the answer, this will be considered cheating.
Answering an individual home exam or other type of individual written work must be an individual and independent work. The answer/work shall not be based on the same original work or have the same author or common disposition as other answers/works.
How is cheating detected?
INN University uses the Ouriginal plagiarism detection programme to detect cheating. Submitted examinations are checked in comparison to other texts such as curriculum literature, webpages and previously submitted examinations – including your own previous examinations. Cheating is also detected, for example, by an examiner recognizing a text when evaluating an answer, or by an examination supervisor reporting suspected cheating
What happens if you are suspected of cheating?
If you are suspected of cheating, you will be contacted by INN University and you will have the opportunity to comment on the matter if you wish. You may provide your comments either verbally or in writing, and you have the right to see any documents related to your case. It is INN University’s Appeals Committee who makes decisions in cases relating to cheating, and its decisions can be appealed to the joint National Appeals Committee.
If you wish to argue in front of the committee when your case is being processed, you have grounds to do so. You are entitled to use a lawyer or another spokesperson. INN University covers the costs of an attorney at a public payroll rate from the time it has been decided that the case will be sent to the Appeals Committee for decision-making.
What are the consequences of cheating?
In case of proven cheating, the consequence is usually the annulment of the examination / submitted assignment and suspension from INN University for up to one year. In case of repeated cheating and in other special cases, one can be suspended for up to 2 years. In addition, the student loses the right to sit examinations at all universities and university colleges in Norway. Note that attempted cheating and contributing to cheating may also lead to suspension.
How to avoid cheating?
Thoroughly familiarize yourself with reference techniques! Do not fall for the temptation to use someone's text without referencing this both in the body of your text and in your bibliography.
INN University works purposefully to facilitate students to gain good knowledge in the correct use of sources. The library offers, among other things, the following courses:
INN University expects all students to take responsibility for learning correct reference techniques. This entails that you as a student must learn the right reference techniques for your field of study, as well as actively seek help if you need it. The library's webpages provide you with more information, and the same can be done by your lecturers, student counsellors, and our librarians.

Chapter 9 of the regulations on admissions, studies and examinations at University of Inland Norway specifies what is considered cheating on examinations and compulsory activities.
Students who have cheated or attempted to cheat can have their exam annulled and/or be suspended for a period of up to 2 years, cf. the Universities and University Colleges Act, section 12-4. During the same period, you can lose the right to take exams at all institutions under the law. Students who participate in cheating can also be suspended.
You yourself are responsible for familiarizing yourself with the INN University’s regulations, including rules on the correct use of sources. The declaration must make you aware of your responsibility and the consequences of cheating. Failure to declare does not exempt you from this responsibility.
By ticking "I am familiar with the content" in Studentweb, I confirm that I am aware that violations of the above provisions and rules for the individual exam can be considered cheating.
I agree that when submitting and completing the exam and compulsory activities at INN University, I must ensure that references to all sources used are given correctly.
Unless otherwise stated, I cannot:
- prepare an answer together with others and deliver or present this as my own.
- use artificial intelligence or other technology to create an answer for me and deliver or present it as my own.
- reuse content from previously passed exam answers or approved compulsory activities without stating that this is your own previous work.
The self-declaration form is signed at the time of registering for the semester in Studentweb.
