The 2013 conference organisers invite the submission of proposals for papers on aspects of

theory, philosophy, research and practice in the sociology of music education. The

symposium welcomes research and scholarly investigations into a wide range of contexts,

such as schools, universities, festivals, communities, the media, homes and the internet, and

‘music education’ is understood to include all forms of teaching and learning music – formal,

informal and non-formal.

Submissions are encouraged from researchers at all stages of their careers, and research from

qualitative, quantitative, mixed-method or philosophical approaches are welcome. Scholars

focusing on music and musical practices outside of Euro-American traditions are especially

encouraged.

Conference presentations will be 30 minutes in length. Proposals should contain no more than

500 words and provide reviewers with sufficient information to judge the purpose, methods,

results and scholarship of the research. The deadline for proposals is January 15, 2013, and

the document should be sent as a PDF attachment. Author name or any other identifying

information should not be included in the proposal. Please send proposals and any direct

questions you may have to ssme2013@hihm.no.
