Why did you choose INN as your exchange destination?
I chose Lillehammer for my exchange semester because of its historic location, as it has hosted the Winter Olympics in 1994. The city combines my passion for winter sports with my desire to live in Norway for a period of my life. Additionally, the University offered interesting courses that combined tourism, economics, sports, and ethics.
How would you describe your time as an exchange student at INN?
"Transformative" is the word that best describes my exchange semester.
Before this experience, I had already spent time abroad in Canada and Costa Rica, but Norway had the greatest impact on shaping my personality. The concept of friluftsliv (the outdoor lifestyle) was especially influential. Prioritizing sports, focusing on my physical and mental well-being, and even enjoying black coffee in the evening are habits I adopted in Norway and continue to follow at home. However, what enriched my experience the most was living together with Norwegians, cooking traditional Norwegian food, and immersing myself in their traditions.
What is the best memory of your exchange at INN?
I had many incredible experiences, but the highlight was cross-country skiing through nearly untouched nature. Another unforgettable memory was volunteering at various events, including the Ski Jumping World Cup in Lillehammer, the Lillehammer Live music festival, and working at the Studenten café at the university. I also participated in the student group Laget, where I built meaningful friendships by sharing my faith and engaging in deep, valuable conversations with other Christians.
What are your best tips for future exchange students?
Leaving home always requires courage, but try early on to get involved in mixing and mingling with locals through volunteering and starting conversations with Norwegians. Go to student parties in the first weeks, participate in “Fadderuka” as much as possible, and start building your network. The friendships you build can last a lifetime because you have time to do activities together. Also, go outside, move your body, and enjoy the winter wonderland; you can do many fun things around Lillehammer!

How has your exchange influenced or benefitted you?
Through volunteering at Ski Jumping, I started building a network and got an internship with Olympiaparken in Lillehammer. After my internship, I still returned a few times to work there again. I am so grateful for the combination of studying and working in the event business! Besides, I have gained many new friendships. If I had stayed home, I would not be the same Elisa now.

Anything you would like to add?
I like to compare studying to running—it is not a sprint but a marathon. Going on an exchange semester gives you a fresh perspective and an energy boost for this long journey. Leaving your home country is not easy, but it offers an opportunity to grow and become a better version of yourself.
Looking back now, I have realized that I am capable of much more than I ever imagined.
Norway is a beautiful country with many unique traditions, and you absolutely must try a 'Kvikklunsj' or Norwegian tacos!
