About tuition fees
Norwegian higher education institutions are required to collect tuition from students who are not citizens of an European Economic Area (EEA country) or Switzerland.
Students who enrolled in programmes of study prior to August 2023 will not be required to pay for these programmes; they will, however, be required to pay should they apply and gain admission to a different programme of study. Exchange students from partner universities will not be required to pay tuition.
In addition to tuition, applicants from outide the EU/EEA and Switzerland are required to transfer funds to cover living expenses to a deposit account. This is a requirement from the Norwegian Department of Immigration (UDI) for the residence permit application. You can find more information regarding the deposit at the bottom of this page.

Scholarships
University of Inland Norway does not offer any scholarships that cover tuition fees. The university is legally barred from using our grant for student scholarships. The Norwegian government does not provide any scholarships for international students who are required to pay tuition.
Exemptions from paying tuition
Some applicants will be exempt from paying tuition based on their residence in Norway or other close connections with Norway. Students who have accepted an offer of admission may apply for exemption as soon as they have been issued an invoice for tuition payment. The link below provides more information on how to apply for an exemption, valid grounds, and required documentation.
How to pay the tuition fee
You will receive a letter with the necessary payment information in the application portal after you have been offered admission and accepted the offer of admission.
When you receive this letter, please proceed as follows:
- Inform your bank that you wish to transfer the sum stated in the letter.
- Inform your bank that the payment must be received by University of Inland Norway no later than the deadline provided in the letter.
- You must include your date of birth and applicant number in the payment.

Please be advised that the Norwegian Department of Immigration requires that payment be made and received before you may apply for your residence permit.

Information and payment deadlines
Tuition for the first two semesters of study is to be paid in full before the first academic year.
The default payment plan for subsequent academic years is payment for two semesters at a time. However, it is possible to pay tuition on a semester to semester basis after the first academic year. Be aware that paying semester to semester, will lead to the UDI only granting 6 month extensions to your study permit. We therefore recommend paying tuition for each full academic year.
Failure to pay tuition will result in the termination of your admission.
You are required to pay for the full programme of study. If you should be delayed in your studies you will not be charged any additional tuition, but you will still be required to pay the semester registration fee.
If you have courses from another institution recognised as part of your degree, you are still required to pay full tuition.
The semester registration fee must be paid in addition to tuition. The deadline for paying the registration fee is 1 September in the autumn semester and 1 February in the spring semester.
Payment deadlines
International students from outside the EU/EEA who have been admitted to studies for the August enrollment will receive a letter with payment information in the application portal. The payment deadline is June 1.
The deadline for paying tuition for subsequent academic years will be August 1.
Students who are required to pay tuition, but have not applied from outside the EU/EEA, will be contacted regarding their payment deadline. This applies to applicants whose application deadline was April 15 or later.
Refund of tuition
You may be eligible for a tuition fee refund. Our website has detailed information, including the rules and criteria that apply to tuition refunds.
Deposit of funds to cover living expenses
In addition to the tuition fee, students from outside the EU/EEA/EFTA need to document a certain amount of money in a Norwegian bank account to be granted a student residence permit/visa in Norway. You can read more about this amount on our study permit website.
Additional transfer of funds
The deposit will be fully refunded (except for transfer fees) after you have obtained your Norwegian bank account or in case your visa application is declined and you must withdraw your admission.
By accepting the offer of admission at INN University in the Application portal, you also accept that you must transfer the necessary funds to document sufficient financial means for obtaining a residence permit as a student in Norway.
Persons without a Norwegian personal ID number are not permitted to open a bank account in Norway. As a result, it is not possible for new international students to open an account from abroad and transfer the requested amount to this account before applying for a residence permit/visa.
INN University, therefore, operates an account in DNB for international students from countries outside the EU/EEA/EFTA. As mentioned above, non-EU/EEA/EFTA students need to document the possession of a minimum of NOK 170,638* in order to be granted a student residence permit.
Detailed information on how to deposit money into the INN University account will be provided to accepted students.
*This is the sum that applies for 2026; the sum is adjusted each year by the UDI.
Other forms of documentation
The Norwegian Directorate of Immigration (UDI) enforces this rule strictly and will, in most cases, not accept other forms of documentation, such as a bank statement from a bank in your home country or financial guarantees from relatives or other third parties.
If the UDI does not accept your documentation, it will affect your residence permit application in regard to the following:
- The result (your residence permit/visa application may be denied) and
- Processing time (the length of the processing time of the application will be much longer than the normal 2 months), and you will probably not obtain your residence permit/visa in time to start your studies
