Why did you choose INN as your exchange destination?
I selected INN since I was interested in the Nordic countries' societies. My opinions were Denmark, Sweden, and Norway. I was allocated to Norway after applying to an exchange program at my local university. Despite not being the first choice, it turned out that Norway was the best destination out of 3 countries thanks to its breathtaking nature.
How would you describe your time as an exchange student at INN?
My stay in Lillehammer broadened my values so much. Although I initially experienced culture shock, I learned how valuable it is to step out of my comfort zone and stay active. Plus, life in Lillehammer was slow-paced, which would never be possible in Tokyo, and it had a meditative effect. As a result, I have started to spend more time positively, not worrying too much about trivial things since returning home.

What is the best memory of your exchange at INN?
It is very hard to choose, but I would say that just a normal day in Lillehammer remains an unforgettable memory. It feels like I had a little “family” there with whom I studied, cooked, and travelled. Although I still miss Norway after returning home, I have recently realised that it is the memories of my time with fellow exchange students in Lillehammer that I actually miss.
What are your best tips for future exchange students?
Try to socialise more and engage with individuals from different countries, even if you are an introvert. Participating in events in Studenten or Fadderuka will be beneficial. I was a little bit shy and not confident enough in my English. However, I managed to make close friends as I participated in as many social gatherings as possible. I am still in touch with them even after two years, and I am so grateful to all who welcomed me to their group.
How has your exchange influenced or benefitted you?
The experiences I obtained in Norway led me through to embark on my first career, where I have many colleagues from overseas. If I had not acquired adaptability to different cultures and environments in Norway, I would not have been able to work with foreign colleagues as stress-free as I do now. Getting a work trip or expatriation opportunity in Europe is my next objective.
Anything you would like to add?
If you choose INN, I recommend you try a variety of enjoyable activities, including husky sledding, ice skating on the lake, ice bathing, and volunteering for the Ski Jump/Nordic Combined World Cup. For travelling, a road trip to the Lofoten Islands is a must, but if you like a more extraordinary experience, visit Svalbard!
