How to find and choose courses or programmes

Our guidelines for courses and programmes are here to help you navigate our study offer webpages and understand how to read the information about each course and programme.

Guideline

Below is a detailed explanation of how you can find relevant courses and programs. To read the information on this webpage, it is recommended to use a tablet, an iPad, a computer, or a Mac. Please contact the appropriate campus if you have questions about the application process.

Browsing through our course webpage

Check out our English courses and programs. You can sort according to your study level (bachelor/master), campus, and semester. To view all filters, press the "Show additional filters" button.

Click on a course or program. When you have opened the new tab, you can view information such as the course or program name and code, the amount of ECTS credits, and more.

Course and program description

Study plan

After entering the webpage of a specific course or program, see the drop-down list named "Curricula and courses" and click on the "Study plan" button. You will then be taken to a new webpage with a detailed course description.

  • However, for some programs, the links to the detailed description of each course can be found under the drop-down list "About the programme" or "Practical information".
  • Please notice that some study plans are not published or edited until approximately 1-5 months before the application deadline.

You can also check the exam type and grading in the detailed course description.

Mandatory attendance

The course professors will announce mandatory lectures, seminars and workshops during the first lectures.

Number of spots

Some courses may have limited spots for exchange students. Information about any limitations will be posted on the course/program webpage.

If the number of applicants exceeds the available spots, a selection process will be conducted after the application deadline. Admitted students will receive detailed information.

Prerequisites

Some of our courses and programmes have prerequisites. Make sure to check this information for each course, as you might not be qualified.

Prerequisites are divided into "required," "recommended," and "none."

  • For required prerequisites, you must have taken relevant courses at home before the exchange. In such situations, the faculty may decline your request to take the course if you do not meet the prerequisites.
  • For recommended prerequisites, it will be more challenging to take a course without meeting the requirements. However, it is possible to apply and gain admission to the course.
  • Most courses have "no prerequisites". Students from various fields can apply for and gain admission to the relevant courses.

Courses taught in Norwegian

Norwegian-taught courses require proficiency (B2 level) in Danish, Norwegian, or Swedish. If this applies to you, please email the International Office so we can help you find relevant courses.

The only exception is if you wish to take a Norwegian language course to learn the language. Please notice that not all campuses offer a language course.

Credits and course workload

Credits at INN

In Norway, credits are called Studiepoeng (SP). 30 SP = 30 ECTS. Most courses are either 5, 7,5, 10, or 15 ECTS. Some campuses may offer smaller courses of 2,5 ECTS.

  • The usual number of credits per semester for full-time studies in Norway is 30 ECTS.
  • Exchange students staying a full semester are expected to enrol for 30 ECTS, but may enrol for fewer ECTS depending on the requirements of their home institution and the hosting faculty/campus. Contact the International Office for detailed information on the minimum requirements at INN.
    • Non-EU/EEA citizens must enrol in a minimum of 30 ECTS due to the study permit application.
    • An exception applies to students enrolling in an internship.

Course workload

1 ECTS entails 25-30 hours of workload. So, a total of 15 ECTS equals 375-450 hours, while 30 ECTS equals a total of 750-900 hours. Master's courses may require more hours of work compared to Bachelor's courses.

Grading of the exams

The main grading system used at INN is A-F, with "E" being the minimum passing grade. However, some courses may have a grading system of "passed or failed".

You can find the grading for each course in the course description (study plan).

For detailed information on the grading system at INN, visit the Transcript of Records webpage.
