Risk-resilient aquaculture: Balancing profitability with environmental sustainability in investment and operations under uncertainty

Mål for prosjektet

This project seeks to fill these gaps by developing methods to quantify risks, assess environmental impacts across the value chain, and embed both profitability and sustainability considerations into investment and operational decisions.

The aquaculture industry faces the challenge of balancing profitability with environmental sustainability amid significant market and biological risks. While some risks, like disease outbreaks, directly affect financial performance, others—such as pollution and waste—pose broader sustainability challenges without immediate profit impacts. The sector currently lacks tools to integrate such externalities into decision-making, an issue growing in importance with stricter regulations and sustainability-focused investors.

Funding

The project is funded by the NFR with 8 million NOK and led by Maria Lavrutich from NTNU. Christian Ewald at INN is a co-investigator in this project and work-package leader of WP1 – Risk Analysis, which focuses on modeling and understanding risks that directly affect an aquaculture firm’s profitability and how to manage these risks effectively.
