Title: Sentioception: Do Infants Perceive Others as Conscious Subjects?

David Chalmers

Claudia Passos Ferreira

Abstract: Do infants perceive others as conscious subjects? I develop the concept of sentioception, the attribution of phenomenal consciousness to others.  I propose a developmental framework with stages ranging from contingency

detection and agency attribution to phenomenal-state attribution.  I address whether infants represent phenomenology or merely informational states, and whether sentioception is perceptual or inferential. Finally, I suggest that early sentioception provides the developmental root of intuitive dualism and helps explain why humans readily experience AI systems as conscious.

The lecture is to be held in auditorium G at INN Lillehammer, welcome!
