ICCRTS stands for The International Command and Control Research and Technology Symposium, one of the world’s leading scientific conferences on command and control (C2). The conference was held in London from 24–26 September 2024 and was attended by Bjørn Tallak Bakken and Kristoffer Lie Eide from PROTECT.
ICCRTS gathers researchers, practitioners, and leading experts from around the globe to explore the theoretical and practical aspects of C2. The symposium originated from a research group within the United States Department of Defense (US DoD). While command and control are historically associated with military operations, many topics are also highly relevant to civil preparedness and crisis management – particularly as Norway’s total defence concept has seen renewed focus as a field of research and policy development.
Presented new research
– At the conference, we presented research related to the use of autonomous systems and artificial intelligence (AI) in command and control functions for both civilian and military crisis management," said Protect’s director, Bjørn Tallak Bakken. We were pleased with the reception of our presentation, which provided us with valuable feedback from both academic and industrial partners. We look forward to incorporating these insights into our teaching and R&D activities.
Bakken continues:
– A key aspect of participating in conferences is establishing and maintaining connections with both new and established professional communities, which we certainly achieved in London. Other Norwegian research groups were also well represented at the conference, including the Norwegian Defence Research Establishment (FFI). From Sweden, participants included representatives from FOI, their equivalent of FFI.
