Today we start using the Norwegian Research Information Repository (NVA)

INN University is ready to start using the Norwegian Research Information Repository (Norsk vitenarkiv, NVA), which is a new national system for research information.

The Norwegian Research Information Repository (NVA) is a national joint service for registering and reporting research results, and for making research publications accessible. During September, most Norwegian research and higher education institutions will start using this system.

On Monday, 22 September, INN university will start facilitating registration and editing in NVA.

"This is a joyful day", says INN University's library director Anna Løken, pointing out that establishing a joint national archive of knowledge has been a long and somewhat precarious journey.

Replacing both Cristin and Brage

The Norwegian Agency for Shared Services in Education and Research, Sikt, is behind the new joint service.

“NVA replaces all functions that have previously been performed in Cristin and our local knowledge archive Brage, and thus collects both information about research projects and scientific papers in one place”, says Løken.

Cristin (Current research information system in Norway) closed for editing about four weeks ago, and its contents have now been moved to NVA. In recent weeks, INN University has also closed its own archive, Brage, and moved its contents.

“The migration has gone according to plan without major challenges”, says Løken.

An end to doing the same task twice

The goal of one national joint service is to ensure that to all Norwegian scientific papers that are financed by public funds are openly available. The service will make research results more accessible by allowing everyone to search across what have until now been several individual local databases.

When the functions in Cristin and the local databases are linked, it will save institutions and researchers from double registration, and provide better metadata, according to Sikt.

"The new system will reduce work for researchers and libraries", confirms Løken.

When all local knowledge archives have been migrated and all data is in place, an official launch will take place towards the end of the month. Until then, data may be incomplete, according to Sikt.

Start using it today

Due to the transition, it has not been possible to register research projects and scientific papers in recent weeks. Now is the time to get started.

"The new system should be so intuitive that it's very easy to use", says Løken.

She encourages employees to take a look at this page for information and guidance.

In addition, each faculty has been assigned a separate NVA curator or "superuser", who will be able to guide and inform about how to use the new system.

"We have not planned any courses for our employees, but if there is a need, we will of course comply", says the library director, and emphasizes that there will be a function for mass import of articles to NVA.

"This means that a large proportion of scientific papers will be imported into NVA so that our researchers only need to check that their papers have been received, and import the paper itself or the latest peer-reviewed manuscript", says Løken.

Some things still need to be resolved

All academic staff at INN University can choose to have their publications that have been registered in Cristin listed on their personal page at inn.no. All publications registered before 19 August are still listed here, but a technical solution remains to be put in place before publications that are added to NVA appear on these pages. The new API is expected to be in place during the current year.
