Uniform at Work Day

On Friday, 6 December, you will see many military uniforms at our various campuses. Uniform at Work Day is organised by the Norwegian Home Guard and is an annual event to highlight soldiers and their efforts.

Why do we have this day?

The Home Guard is a branch of the Norwegian Armed Forces and serves as a national peparedness and response force. Its soldiers are primarily civilians who have completed initial military service and now work in other professions.

This means that the Home Guard's soldiers are represented across many different work environments. The goal of Uniform at Work Day is to highlight these soldiers and foster pride and recognition for their efforts.

The Home Guard is prepared to assist in times of peace, crisis and war, making it a defence branch particularly vital to local preparedness in the country's municipalities.

Home Guard soldiers in uniform

Soldiers who belong to the Home Guard and receive permission from their civilian workplace or educational institution are the ones wearing their uniforms on Friday.

Participation in the initiative is voluntary, but it is a popular event nationwide. As a result, you can expect to see many soldiers.

For some, seeing many people in military uniforms might seem intimidating. However, it is important to emphasise that none of them are armed. The event is not intended to cause concern but rather to highlight the significant presence and contributions of the Home Guard.

We encourage staff and students who are soldiers in the Home Guard at the University of Inland Norway to wear their uniforms on Friday.
