Instruction for course coordinators regarding exams

The instruction provides information about the tasks of a subject responsible in connection with the implementation of the examination. For all legal purposes, the original instruction in Norwegian is the authoritative version.

About the instruction

This instruction outlines the tasks of course coordinator in relation to the conduct of examinations at the University of Inland Norway

1.Course coordinator

In this context, the course coordinator refers to the person or persons who have the primary academic responsibility for a study programme.

2.Examination Information and Information on Compulsory Activities

The course coordinator, within agreed deadlines and normally two weeks before the exam, should provide the necessary information for the exam to the student administration. This includes the registration of approved compulsory activities in FagpersonWeb. After agreement with the student administration, the registration can be made using a form.

3. Examination Question and Examiner’s instructions

The course coordinator is responsible for preparing the exam questions and the examiner's instructions. If there is no external marking, the exam questions and examiner's instructions should be evaluated by an external examiner before the exam and marking are carried out. In cases where there is no external evaluation, another subject specialist at the university should review the questions and examiner's instructions. The requirements as to impartiality in Chapter II of the Public Administration Act apply to the preparation of exam questions and grading guidelines, as these form the basis for the assessment of students' performance.

The course coordinator is responsible for ensuring that the exam questions is available in the examination system, normally two weeks before the exam. Norwegian-language exam questions should be available in the forms of language the students are entitled to. The student administration provides an overview of language form requirements after the registration deadline has expired – no later than one month before the exam. For exam questions in Norwegian subjects, students cannot demand a specific language form.

The course coordinator clarifies with the student administration how the examiner's instructions are made available to the examiners in the examination system. The course coordinator should post the examiner's instructions in the learning platform after the grade is announced, so that the students have access to it. Exceptions for publication in the learning platform can be made where exam questions are to be reused, and this must be clarified with the student administration so that students may get access in another way.

4.Exam Aids

For supervised exams, the course coordinator should inform the students about the allowed exam aids, and any rules for their use, no later than two weeks before the exam. This is done on the learning platform.

Rules for each individual exam should always be stated in information about the exam in the exam system.

5. Availability During the Exam

To avoid any formal mistakes in the conduct of the exam, the course coordinator should be available for questions during the exam so that any ambiguities, deficiencies, or errors in the task text can be quickly corrected. The course coordinator should be available for contact/call from the student administration throughout the entire exam.

If it is not possible for the course coordinator to be available during the exam, the course coordinator must notify this so that the faculty can appoint another academic contact person. If additional information is given during the exam that may affect the exam result, this should always be immediately communicated to the student administration. In consultation with the course coordinator, the student administration finds a suitable way to notify all exam candidates.
