Guideline for issuing diplomas and documentation

This guideline regulates issuing of diplomas and documentation. For all legal purposes, the original guideline in Norwegian is the authoritative version.

About the guideline

The aim of the guideline is to provide detailed provisions on diplomas and documentation.

1. Studies that provide diplomas or documentation

University of Inland Norway automatically issues diplomas with an accompanying Diploma Supplement (DS) to students who complete a degree program, vocational education or a practical-pedagogical education within the standard time.

Students who complete a study program that does not lead to a degree or vocational education receive digital documentation.

Students can order digital documentation from Studentweb at any time during their studies to show results.

2. Language of diploma

The diploma is issued in the language stated in the study program's study plan.

3. Education in collaboration with other institutions

It should be stated on the diploma if the education is provided in collaboration with other institutions."

4. Requirements for the content of the diploma

The requirements for the content of the diploma follow the national diploma template developed by the Universities Norway (UHR).

5. Awarding of the degree and signature on the diploma

The degree is awarded on the front page (page 1) of the diploma.

Signature digital diploma/DS/documentation

  • The digital signature for diplomas and documentation is on page 1.
  • The digital signature in DS is under item 7.

Signature paper diploma/DS

  • Page 1 must be signed by the dean and by the person the dean authorizes.
  • The basis for the degree is stamped with the institution's stamp and signed by the case officer.
  • The Diploma Supplement is stamped with the institution's stamp and signed by the case officer.

6. Diploma and documentation

Diplomas and documentation for completed study programs are issued in digital format for degree studies, 1-year programmes and half-year programmes.

The student themselves retrieves results from Studentweb and the Diploma Registry for studies with less than 30 credits in scope.

Students without a Norwegian birth number and PhD candidates receive the diploma in paper format.

7. Diplomas and documentation for completed study

Diplomas and documentation for completed study programs are issued only once.

Results from exams taken after the study program has been completed are not included in the diploma or documentation for the completed study program. By completed, it is meant that all subjects included in the education plan/degree have been passed.

8.Loss of diploma

Where it can be documented that the diploma issued in paper format has been lost in a fire, theft or similar, a duplicate can be issued upon application against a fixed fee.

The fee is 1000 kroner. For older diplomas not found in the college's database, the fee is 1300 kroner.

9. Confirmation of obtained degree

Upon request, confirmation of an obtained degree can be issued free of charge. Confirmation of an obtained degree can either be a copy of the "Basis for diploma" or a written confirmation with accompanying documentation.

10.Invalid diploma and documentation

If an issued diploma or documentation is considered invalid due to annulled exams, it should be revoked according to the Act of Universities and Colleges § 12-4 sixth paragraph. If the diploma provides a basis for authorization, the relevant authority should be notified.

If a digital diploma or documentation is considered invalid, the document will be deleted in the student system and will not be available in Studentweb or the Diploma Registry.

If the diploma or documentation issued in paper format is not returned on time, the university can seek assistance from the bailiff in accordance with the rules in the Act of Forced Execution chapter 13.

11. Appeal

There is a right to appeal against individual decisions on the issuance of diplomas and documentation according to the Public Administration Act § 28. The deadline for appeal is three weeks from the time the decision has reached the party, cf. the Public Administration Act § 29.
