About the guideline
The aim of this guideline is to describe additional provisions about examinations.
1. When should the continuation examination be held
As a general rule, a continuation examination should be held during the subsequent semester for students who have presented themselves for the ordinary examination and did not pass, or who have a valid absence from the ordinary examination, in accordance with the regulations on studies, admission, and examinations at University of Inland Norway § 6-7 first paragraph.
Access to the continuation examination assumes that the university will arrange such an examination for students who have failed or have a valid absence from the ordinary examination.
2. Who can attend a continuation examination
The faculty may, in special cases, grant access to the continuation examination for individual students according to the regulations on studies, admission and examinations at University of Inland Norway § 6-7 fourth paragraph.
The following are considered special cases
- Students who are in their final semester of a program leading to a bachelor's or master's degree can participate in a continuation examination to improve an already passed result. This is only in case if there will be no ordinary examination in the course before the student completes the study program.
- Students who are on an exchange stay organized by the university when the ordinary examination is held.
- Students who have extensive positions of trust at the faculty or institutional level at the university or at a national level. Normally, it will be assumed that the position has a scope equivalent to 10 hours per week, or that the position has extensive scope in periods.
- Students resuming studies after leave and exclusion.
3. Continuation exam for expired courses
When a course is removed from the teaching offer, the university is obliged to arrange an ordinary examination in the subsequent semester according to § 6-2 in the Regulations on Admission, Studies and Examinations. If there are still active students with the grade F/failed or with valid absence after an extra ordinary examination, a final ordinary examination is held. Everyone with the right to study and take exams should be able to sign up for this very last occurrence, if it is held.
Example of an outgoing course
First exam: Ordinary exam for an entire cohort
Second exam: Ordinary exam (open to everyone)
Third and final exam: Ordinary exam (only arranged if there are still active students with a valid reason, but still open to everyone)
4. Application and deadlines
Students apply for access to the continuation examination based on section 2 in this guideline by the set registration deadline. Applications should be sent by email to the faculty's study administration. Students with a failure grade or valid absence from the last held ordinary examination register for the continuation examination in the Student web.
5. Appeal
There is a right to appeal individual decisions about access to the continuation examination according to the Public Administration Act section 28. The deadline for appeal is three weeks from the point of time the decision has been communicated to the party, cf. Public Administration Act section 29.
