Guideline for awarding freely-composed bachelor’s degree

This guideline regulates awarding freely-composed bachelor’s degree.  For all legal purposes, the original guideline in Norwegian is the authoritative version.

About the guideline

The aim of the guideline is to ensure equal treatment of applications for a composite bachelor's degree at University of Inland Norway.

1. Diploma and Diploma Supplement

For a bachelor's degree according to the Regulations on Admission, Studies, and Examination at University of Inland Norway § 3-2 first paragraph letter c (composite bachelor's degree), a diploma and Diploma Supplement are issued upon application with documentation from the student, cf. Regulations on Admission, Studies, and Examination at University of Inland Norway § 10-1 eigth paragraph.

2. Academic assessment

It is the individual faculty that, after an academic assessment, determines which subject area or study program can be approved as a specialization and additional subject area in a composite bachelor's degree. Independent work is also approved after an academic assessment."

3. Former education

Education completed before the new degree structure was introduced in 2003 can, after an academic assessment, be included in a composite bachelor's degree cf. point. 2.

4. Academic overlap

Double credit is not given for the same subject content within the same degree. In case of overlap in subject content between subjects or study programs included in the basis for a degree, the total credit point sum will be reduced by the number of credit points the overlap corresponds to, cf. Regulations on Admission, Studies, and Examination at University of Inland Norway § 3-6 third paragraph.

5. Specialization for uncompleted study programs

To meet the conditions for specialization, a student who has taken courses equivalent to a completed study program can normally have these approved as equivalent. This applies where the student is admitted to a bachelor's program that is also offered as a 1-year programme. The subjects from the 1-year programme can then be used as the basic level in the specialization in a composite bachelor's degree. This also applies in cases where the bachelor's program is not completed.

6. Academic courses within scientific theory and philosophy and/or other independent academic courses

The following applies when INN itself offers the specialization in a study program:

Courses in the theory of science and philosophy

Where examen philosophicum, examen facultatum and/or other science theoretical courses are mandatory at INN, the courses will be mandatory for the awarding of a composite bachelor's degree according to the Regulations on admission, studies and examination at the University of Inland Norway § 3-2 first paragraph letter c.

Stand-alone courses

Where examen philosophicum, examen facultatum and/or other science theoretical courses are not mandatory at INN, stand-alone courses can be included in the degree.

When the requirements for specialization, further subject area and any subjects in the theory of science/philosophy are fulfilled, stand-alone courses are included if there are missing study points to achieve the requirement of 180 study points in the degree.

7. The independent work

  • must be relevant to the degree
  • may, but need not, be part of the specialization
  • should build on other education/courses, and cannot be covered by introductory or basic courses
  • must constitute one course, and the requirement cannot be covered by several smaller courses

8. Appeal

There is a right to appeal against individual decisions on the award of a composite bachelor's degree according to the Public Administration Act § 28. The deadline for appeal is three weeks from the time the decision has been made known to the party, cf. the Public Administration Act § 29.
