Oral exam

An oral exam usually takes place in a room on campus with the examiners, but in some cases it may also be arranged digitally. You may be asked to prepare a presentation, or you will have a dialogue with the lecturer and the examiner about a chosen or assigned topic.

  • The exam date can be found in Studentweb
  • Detailed information about time and place will be provided before the exam
  • Make sure you arrive in good time before it is your turn, both for physical and digital exams
  • Remember to bring valid photo ID: student card, driver’s licence, bank card with photo or passport

Digital oral exam

When an oral exam is held digitally, it is important that you read the rules for digital oral exams before the exam day.

Technical requirements

All participants must use Zoom.

You may use wired or wireless internet, but a wired connection reduces the risk of lagging sound or blurred video.

To ensure good audio and video quality, all participants must have:

  • Audio: headphones with microphone or a table microphone (wired or wireless)
  • Video: a webcam (built‑in or connected)

If the requirements for audio and video are not met, the candidate may be denied participation and not be allowed to complete the exam.

Make sure you install any updates to your operating system, browser or Zoom client well before the exam so that nothing interrupts you on the exam day.

Preparation and exam procedure

The course coordinator/study administration is responsible for setting up the Zoom meeting and sending the link to all participants. Information about your individual exam time will be made available in Canvas or by email.

  • Zoom meetings can be created through Canvas or directly from the Zoom client (security settings will be the same).
  • Using Canvas is recommended, as the meeting link will then be easily available for candidates and added to their Canvas calendar.
  • Before using Zoom on the exam day, it is recommended to close all unnecessary programs on your computer.

On the exam day

  • All candidates must find a suitable place with a neutral background (virtual backgrounds are not allowed) and set aside enough time to prepare. The environment should be quiet so nothing disturbs the exam.
  • The room and the candidate’s face must be well lit. Avoid strong backlight (for example from a window). Place a light source in front of you instead.
  • At the start of the exam, the examiner will check your identity. You must show a valid student card or other photo ID (bank card, driver’s licence or passport) to the webcam.
  • Candidates may be allowed to share their screen if needed (for example when giving a presentation).

If a candidate experiences a serious unexpected technical problem during the exam, it must be assessed individually whether the candidate will be allowed to take the exam again at a later time.

Rules and advice for digital oral exams

  • Digital oral exams must be carried out using Zoom.
  • The exam must not be recorded.
  • It is recommended to test your Zoom connection and equipment (for example with a fellow student or colleague) no later than the day before the exam.

Explanation and grade

The grade will be published in Studentweb either during the exam day or shortly after the exam.

Please note that for oral exams, candidates who want an explanation must request this immediately after the grade has been announced, cf. the Universities and University Colleges Act § 11‑8.
