For a long time, our research has focused on tourism, second home development, and balancing conservation and utilisation objectives. In recent years, we have increasingly examined general development challenges in rural areas, such as planning in small municipalities, population decline, public health, living conditions, and entrepreneurship.

We have built a significant research network with both national and international participation. ENRI’s staff are active in the Norwegian Mountain Research Network and the journal Utmark. The institute has been a member of the international network Euromontana since 2014 and is represented on its board. Additionally, we are active in the Network for European Mountain Research (Nemor).

Examples of Projects

  • The Horizon 2020 project MATILDE  was concluded in 2023. This project focuses on the impact of migration on the local development of rural and mountainous areas.
  • Another example of a project concentrating on rural areas is CreaTur, funded by RFF Innlandet. The main goal of CreaTur is to investigate how the sharing economy can enhance value creation and employment for Innlandet’s tourism businesses and creative industries.
  • The 2021 thematic report on second homes in Innlandet, with numerous references to projects in mountainous areas, will be available here. This digital report provides an overview and summary of research on the impact of second homes on various societal aspects in Innlandet. The report and reference list are updated annually with newer publications.
