UL is a dynamic institution located on Ireland's west coast, founded in 1972 on the eve of Ireland’s accession to the EU. It has state-of-the-art facilities and 18,000 students, including 3,000 international students.

As a member of the Athena Swan Charter, UL recognises and encourages a commitment to gender mainstreaming in all areas of higher education and research and is a designated University of Sanctuary17 supporting refugees to access higher education through financial and personal support programmes.

The Department of UL Engage18 was established in September 2015, with the aim of integrating civic and community engagement into the University's core missions in research and teaching. UL Engage serves as the hub for civic engagement activities across campus. The university actively engages with its community through UL Engage and is part of the UNESCO-sponsored Knowledge for Change global alliance.

UL is known for its excellence in translational research, cooperative education, and its pioneering role in European Studies (with the first dedicated BA in European Studies in Europe and the first MA in European Integration) and Cooperative Education in Ireland. The university's Erasmus+ programme has been recognised with multiple awards, including the Best Erasmus+ Programme in the Irish Education Awards.
